Cowtown, USA??

Being from Texas, some of the largest town in Texas don't seem to take offense to be called a "Cowtown". The largest towns in Texas may also be called an "Overgrown Cowtown".

BTW, maybe for July 4 93.3 is planning to do a greatest-hits "Cowtown Countdown." Try saying THAT five times fast.

Now YOU'RE on to something -- trademark that!
I was going to put together a special episode of "Secrets" just for you, Nu, featuring nothing but songs about cows -- but then I realized that I don't have any songs about cows. Whoops, sorry, I do (sort of): Steely Dan's "Black Cow".

Jake, "Secrets" was off the yesterday air when I tuned into WCRS-LP. Maybe you will replay
it next week?

Yes, that's the plan. Actually, I think we'll replay both Thursday's and Friday's episodes next Thursday and Friday, since they kind of went together. The first night's songs were about different roads, and the second night's tunes (had the show aired) would have been about different cars being driven on those roads. Anyone who doesn't want to wait until next Friday can hear last night's intended YTS-353 at http://www.wcrsfm.org/content/yesterdays-top-secrets-yts-353-jun29. Thanks for the inquiry, Artie!

For too long, Columbus has considered itself worthy of being called a big city or a major market when it simply is not. What person living in the New York City, San Francisco, or Washington DC markets, for example, says "Gee, I wish I was living in Columbus. They have....." - the butter cow? OSU football? John Corby? the Short North?

As far as cutting edge radio in Columbus, please tell me:
1.) Does Columbus have a dance music station like WKTU or the old Party 105? How about urban - Who in Columbus is as edgy as Miss Jones or Ed Lover?
2.) As for talk, can Joel Riley really discuss world events as well as a John Gambling or Fred Grandy? What has Corby said about quantitative easing or CAIR?
3.) Would the average person be more impressed with the Metropolitan Opera or Opera Columbus? The National Symphony or the Columnus Symphony? Kennedy Center or Wexner Center?

Columbus might be impressive if you grew up in Logan or Lancaster and never saw anything beyond that. Otherwise, people on the coasts think you are just hicks in flyover country who think you are cool because you watch American Idol.

So what do we make of the 27 markets between Columbus and DC? Columbus' goal is to achieve parity with cities like Cincinnati, Kansas City, Sacramento...even Indianapolis. And in some ways it already has (especially if you leave radio out of it). Not NY, LA, Chicago, Boston or DC.

I have no interest in Columbus being considered an "equal" to NYC, LA, Chicago, or any of that ilk. It is just not possible.

They have their own sets of problems that we can do without out here in the hinterlands, thank the Lord.

Corby's show is not the type of talk show that would focus on "quantitative easing", whatever the heck that is. He just chats about "stuff", but I rarely listen.

Since I do not have an interest in cutting edge dance music, if that was the only thing keeping this city from being "equal" to NYC et al, I still would not care.

And I have never watched American Idol, thank you very much.

We don't think we are cool here, we (many of us) are fine with living here.

There is a new thing called streaming audio;you should check out if you don't like Columbus radio. I hear you can listen to radio stations from all over the world on it! Who'd a thunk it?

Thank you Mr. Board Editor.

All I'm saying here for the record it seems to me that "Cow Town" is nothing more than a historic reference to Elsie The Cow...back when Borden was still in buisiness....and let's face it...Columbus is synonymous with agriculture

Columbus, like the rest of Ohio, seems pretty typical of most Midwestern towns...

there are a lot of special things here, lots of hidden gems, along with some pretty silly other stuff...basically it's an area that is big enough to get lost in, but not big enough to have a whole lot of urban problems. It's not that forward thinking, but in a way that's good, because I find "forward thinkers" most of the time have agendas..

and we already have plenty of those.

Radio, TV, and Broadcast in general, could and should be a lot better, but that's basing that thought on a bunch of folks who compare it with something they like in another market. I am NOT saying the products here are good, but they are generally ok for the most part.

Granted, if you want big city music, you have to look for the club that plays it...

want sports, that isn't dominated by OSU, move...

want an agenda...go make your own, try and leave me a way to ignore it..

want to live a fairly, by comparison uneventful life, (other than wet roads with stupid drivers) with few external hassles, (skipping jack-knifed semi trailers) move to Columbus

Columbus has a better Alternative station than any of the top five markets. Especially NYC :p

Those guys on the coasts got nothin' on me, not even Miss Lover or Ed Jones. 8)
