COX and LIN REACH 11th hour agreement

From Cox's website.As predicted .....
Agreement Reached with WPRI and WNAC

"We are pleased to announce that Cox has reached an agreement with LIN TV Corporation, owner of WPRI and WNAC to continue to carry the stations on Cox's lineup. As a result of the agreement, there will not be an interruption in service and Cox customers can continue to view programming on these channels."

I was watching letterman and it was 12:05 and WPRI was still on so I checked the other 3 stations WNAC,MYRI TV and COOL TV.All still on the line up. Cox was the only update on thier website.

These stations are lucky that I'm not in charge. If I were a cable company I wouldn't even budge when these broadcast corporations tried to back me up against a wall to pay more. I would just replace them with something else. Customers would adjust. No wonder the cable bill is always going up. As a matter of fact I just got a bill last week that says prices are increasing starting with my next bill.

Anyway... the end result of this dispute between LIN and COX was very predictable. Everybody here knew exactly what was going to happen.

Skynet, I was wondering if the cost increase has anything to do with COOL TV being added.I'm sure they have to pay ASCAP and all the things you would if it were a radio station.I know its video music but same concept

Did WTNH/WCTX in Connecticut help raise my Comcast rates? My February bill went up by about $2.50 or so. I only have limited basic and no converter. I made no change in my type of service.

Like WPRI/WNAC, WTNH/WCTX are also LIN stations. The CoolTV is carried on WCTX-TV 59-2.

I would love to see a list of how much each station I receive charges COX per subscriber. It would be nice to know who is robbing me. I know that ESPN charges a good chunk of change. LIN probably charges Cox more than any other local Broadcaster does. They've got 4 stations on the lineup. WPRI, Cool TV, WNAC and My-TV. Cox should make a list available with some dollar amounts on it. I would really appreciate knowing who is charging what.

Why is this all LIN's fault?

Where is it written that Cox *must* pass along these added retrans fees to their customers? Why can't Cox just absorb them? Or cut their expenses somewhere else?

Where is it written that LIN *must not* pass along *their* added expenses to customers who use LIN's product to make a profit?

When gas prices go up does the supermarket absorb that fee? Answer NO.Same concept.Your 99 cent bag of chips not to long ago are now 1.09 or 1.59 like the market near me.

Exactly my point.

Does LIN still get gas for the WPRI news cars at $2.49? Of course not.

So why is LIN evil when they raise their prices?

LIN isn't evil. But they are a bit unfair when they raise rates and charge COX an unreasonable amount of money compared to what other local stations charge COX. This is why I want to see a list of what each station charges COX per subscriber. Then I can see for myself how unreasonable LIN is trying to be.

I understand that raising prices is a way of life. But when The mini-mart down the street from me charges $2.49 for a gallon of Milk and Shaw's charges $3.99 for that same gallon of milk. Some people might call that "Price gouging". But you see... at least I have a choice of where I buy my Milk. However there is only one Cable company in my town. I don't have much of a choice in that matter. Not if I want Cable.

There have been no problems with contract negotiations between WJAR and COX or WLNE and COX or WLWC and COX. So why the problem between WPRI and COX? Probably because WPRI wanted to charge COX a lot more money than the other stations charge COX. Sort of like the supermarket down the street wants to charge me more than other places do for my Milk. Do they have a right to do this? Sure they do. But is there a point where it becomes a bit greedy for them to do it? I would say Yes.

Stations that charge to much are going to end up pricing themselves right off the cable lineup. At least half of their ratings will go right out the window and so will their sales revenues. So from the way I see it..... WPRI needs COX more than COX needs WPRI.
