Cox Cable Dropping WNBC 4

Cox will be dropping WNBC NBC 4 on June 30 from cable channel 13. What will be moving to cable channel 13 is CTN which is Connecticut's State Channel. CTN is currently on Cox Digital Cable.

As for this I don't have much a problem with Cox dropping WNBC as we didn't need it. Would of been better if they dropped the Shop at Home channel on cable channel 8 as it hardly ever has a clear picture. Now the only New York City channel we will get is WPIX WB 11.

Where in Connecticut are you? As far as I know, Comcast's Middletown branch still carries WNYW-TV (FOX) channel 5 and WWOR-TV (UPN) channel 9, for whatever reason. Meanwhile, Comcast's New Britain and Hartford branches haven't carried any out-of-state stations except for WGBY-TV (PBS) channel 57 Springfield, MA since the end of 1999.

I live in the Cox Southington, Cheshire, Meriden area. We used to get more of the New York City channels but Cox dropped them in 1998 or 1999.
Here is what we used to get:
WCBS CBS 2
WNYW FOX 5
WWOR UPN 9
WSBK UPN 38 (even before they were UPN we had WSBK which I believe was because they were the TV home of the Boston Red Sox)
(never got the NYC PBS station or WABC 7)

We used to get WSBK-TV for years because they were classified as a superstation and because of the sports (Red Sox and Bruins). New Britain last saw WSBK-TV at the end of 1999. It was on for a short time in 2000 allowing for certain Bruins games. It went away for good soon after that.

Go back to 1986, maybe 1987 and our cable system at the time (United Cable) carried channel 5, 9 and 11 from New York and channel 38 from Boston. You can also thank SYNDEX (syndicated exclusivity), WB and UPN (maybe PAX to a lesser extent) for killing off the superstations.

To this day, I wonder why Comcast still carries channel 57 from Springfield, MA? A good deal of their programming is the same as WEDH-TV (PBS) channel 24 from Hartford. Shouldn't they be carrying WUTH-CA (FUT) channel 47 (low-power) from Hartford instead?

WUTH-CA has no must-carry rights. But there are rules that obligate cable systems to carry a certain number of noncommercial signals, if they're available with sufficient signal strength, hence the continued carriage of WGBY. It's the same reason the Adelphia system over in Norwich still carries WGBH as well as WEDN.

(WGBH is one of only two Boston signals remaining on that system, the other being WCVB - and that's blacked out now for just about everything except local news.)

I live in New Britain's south end. I barely get WUTH-CA (FUT) channel 47 over here. It's a low-power Telefutura station and I believe they transmit from a hill in Glastonbury (further away than downtown Hartford). I also have trouble picking up WHCT-LP channel 38, which transmits from Avon Mountain. Except for channel 3, I've always had problems from that site. It's to the NNW of my house. So is Walnut Hill (and the park with the same name). That blocks my signal some since I'm at the bottom of that hill. My grandmother uses what's left of a roof antenna that's in the attic for her TV downstairs. Her results with 18 (Univision) and 24 (PBS) are nearly the same as mine with rabbit ears on the second floor at my TV. Placing the rabbit ears on the window sill isn't practical and it really makes no difference in signal quality.

Well this sucks. Granted almost everything on WNBC is the same as what's on WVIT, I like having WNBC too because I like knowing what's going on in NYC. It's also good if WVIT is running special programming (i.e. coverage of a major weather event)instead of NBC Programming. Plus WNBC offers a weekend newscast in the morning. WPIX does not. Now if I want to know what's going on in NYC on the weekned I'm gonna have to wait until 10PM.

It's the stupid DPUC. They're the one's behind this. They're the one's that says CTN must be on basic cable.

I don't care that WSAH is must carry, COX needs to get rid of it. The people running WSAH are obviously morons. I don't care if he, she, or it does read this message board. WSAH again was off the air from around 7PM last night until this afternoon. They were also off the air for the entire Memorial Day Weekend from 1PM Saturday May 28 until 10:45PM Monday May 30. The whole rest of that week they continued having problems. Then they were off the air from Friday Morning June 3 (I woke up at 8AM and saw them off) until Saturday June 4th at 3:30PM.
______________

That's close enough to Hartford so that WVIT-30 probably could have forced Cox to take WNBC-4 New York off of the local cable systems.

Interestingly, both are NBC O&O's. But except for local news and perhaps a couple of other local programs, the same network and syndicated programs air on both stations.

I don't know if WNBC's over-the-air signal goes that far north. But with you being a bit southwest of Hartford, perhaps a good outdoor antenna aimed at New York might get you (barely) reception of WNBC. A signal amplifier will help.

How far into Connecticut does WNBC go? I know that Cable companies as far away as Branford used to carry it. I don't know if that's still the case.

As far as I know, it's never been carried here in New Britain or in Hartford (both are Comcast franchises today). We once got channels 5, 9 and 11 on cable here but that was in the 1980s.

So because they were off the air, the people there are morons?
your logic is WAYYYY off dude.

WHCT-LP 38 transmits from the WCCC tower with a Peanut shaped north-south pattern.

Over the air WNBC and most NYC stations only reach through Fairfield County. Although you can probably pick them up in parts of Litchfield county due to the elevation.
On cable, the NYC stations are on all Fairfield and most New Haven County systems.

WSAH

TX,

I've lived in Southington and have had COX Cable since 2003. (When I lived in Bristol and had AT&T Cable we didn't get WSAH. We got the cable feed of Shop-At-Home). In those 2 years WSAH has been off the air for a period eqvilant to 2 weeks. To me that seems like a long time. Sometimes they're off the air completely, other times the picture is very blury, too bright, with audio that's just sounds like static or as I call it BZZZZZ. Sometimes it's equipment failure other times it's a problem with their automation system. I can understand the automation system causing the station to go off the air. The same thing would occasionally happen when I interned at WXCT Radio. WSAH's engineer once told me if it gets hot enough the tubes blow, knocking the station off the air and he has to replace them. That I don't understand. Tubes to me sounds like old-time technology. Radios don't have tubes any more. And I can understand them being off the air when the entire town of Seymour had no power.
______________

Of course, I thought a big, well-known company like Scripps-Howard would put some money into the station, but apparently, they didn't (yet).

If WSAH had better equipment like Scripps' affiliated stations (and better programming), they would be seen in a better light, rather than stooping to "moron" level.

Exactly. That what I meant. I thought being owned by EW Scripps they'd sink money into the station even if it is a Shopping Station.
______________

I am just wondering why Cox didn't drop WNBC when they dropped most of the New York City channels. It would of been nice if they left WCBS and dropped WNBC instead back then. Reason for that is during the NFL season we could see more NFL games because WCBS airs the Jets while WFSB airs the Patriots. Which would of been a better reason to keep WCBS then WNBC.

It seems like the cable systems in CT have more public access/government/education channels than anywhere else that I've seen. I know people who have Comcast in New Britain and I can think of at least 4 public access (state/local gov't) channels. I used to have Comcast here in Jersey City, NJ and we only had two public access channels. All of the following channels are on Jersey City's "regular" non-digital tier but not on New Britain's regular tier. And from what I've heard New Britain's cost is actually a dollar or two more per month.

WGN Superstation
ESPN Classic
MSG Network
Outdoor Life Channel
MUN2
Galavision
Discovery Health Channel
MTV2 (shared)
Turner Classic Movies
Bravo
Style
Game Show Network
Speed Channel
Weatherscan Local

The only channels offered on regular cable in New Britain and not on regular cable in Jersey City are the Disney Channel, and NESN and NECN (both of which are regional). Just an interesting observation...
