Cox Cable Stealing Minutes From Headline News

I checked this page to see if anyone mentioned this before. If they did, sorry...

I've noticed over the past several months that CNN Headline News will come back 'late' from commercials during the last segment, around 23/53 minute marks. The story is in progress. I then paid more attention and realized it's most cable stuff or other local commercials. I get Cox Cable out of Phoenix. Is this happening to other Cox areas/other cable companies?

Hmm...

To me, that sounds like the GPI signal firing at CNN Headline News, is firing late, or Cox Cable does not have their Automation computer set correctly for GPI.

GPI is a signal that the cable network's Broadcast Operations sends out, so that they (the local cable company) can run local ads for one minute during the commercial break of the cable network.

Hi everyone:

Here in Denver where we get Comcast (Comcast is THE ONLY game in town unless you go with either DirecTV or DISH), we get the same problem, though not with CNN channels (And as far as I've noticed, not with any of the Turner channels).

The biggest problem we have is on NFL Network. You can be watching NFL Network when Comcast drops off to do its local thing (Which can last several minutes, depending on how much time they want to take). But when they finally return to NFL Network, 9 times out of 10, we are returned only to see former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher telling how good it felt to win the Super Bowl during the network's promo of their Champions show. It's so bad and annoying you can almost set your clock to it.

Of course Comcast drops off other networks (Many of them on Digital channels) to run local stuff, but for some odd reason, they're able to return to network in time once the break is over. But with NFL Network (Which we also get on Digital) - NO WAY.

Really strange....

Cheers :D

In the Bay Area, ComCast cuts into CNN-HN programming with their "ComCast Local Edition" feature - short interviews with local people of note, generally about some local event, activity, charity, etc. While there is nothing wrong with these features per se, they always come at an unwelcome time - generally pre-empting the CNN-HN story that was previously teased by the anchor, and I wanted to hear.

In Atlanta, Comcast also cuts into Headline News - but with local news from WSB-TV instead.

Shows like you are mentioning are usually reserved for the Community/Leased Access Channel or a PEG channel.

In Phoenix KPHO (CBS affiliate) used to do a local edition for the last 3/4 minutes of HLN. This is different from coming back from commericial late.

I've read that HN allowed for a 5 minute local news break from a local station at :25 and :55 after the hour. I'd guess that this is still what is happening. I know that WMC 5 in Memphis used to do this on the cable system when it was owned by TW. I'm not sure if it still is done with Comcast.

In the Tampa Bay area, WTSP used to do this on the now-Bright House systems in Pinellas County -- not sure if they still do. The only trouble, though, is that the inserts are not updated on weekends, meaning that the news reports were already stale on Saturday and Sunday.

In Hillsborough, WFLA does something similar for Bright House systems there. It's kind of funny that two different stations produce HN inserts for the same company in different parts of the same market, instead of having one station per market.
