Cox/CC Conspiracy (?)

With the changes made at Clear Chanel/Atlanta, it would seem that they have just "given up" or (maybe) cut a deal with Cox in Cox's home town. Conspiracy theory? Maybe.

CC dumped local talent at GST - helps WSB.
CC dumped classic rock at 96 - helps The River.
CC doesn't have Top 40 - helps The Beat.
CC doesn't have rhythmic oldies - helps Kiss 104.
CC may dump Lite - will help B98.5.
CC may take Lite to Country - no competiton for Cox.
CC changed Buzz to Spanish - no competiton for Cox.

OK. Maybe just a conspiracy theory. But wait. They dropped Air America on WSAI in Cincinnati and replaced it with talk. And almost half of the broadcast day is Boortz and Clark Howard.

Cox.
(walks like a duck...)
Naaaah. Just a coincidence. ;)

Clear Channel is spinning off many of their unprofitable clusters. Currently, Atlanta is not on the auction block but it should be after these changes. Anything is for sale in this world at the right price, especially in the broadcast industry. The best we can hope for is that CBS Radio will purchase the CC Atlanta cluster or maybe both companies can do a swap with another market. That way we can get better programmed formats such as Oldies, News, Jack, dance CHR, and Free FM!

Clear Channel's version of country sucks from what I have heard in other markets. CBS seems to have good ratings on their country stations in urban markets.

If CC was helping Cox in Atlanta, wouldn't Cox be helping them in Cincy (Dayton?)? Shoudn't it be the other way around.

Hey, back in the days of rapidfire buying and selling circa '98-'00, there was a point where everyone of the major companies had seen eachother's bottom lines and budgets.

Stranger things have happened, who knows?

these group owners are COMPETITORS

the objective is to beat the daylights out of the other guys not consort so it's a win-win. the idea is to WIN for your guys and cream the other guys

it's how competition works

While there is no direct conspiracy, you do have to admit that it seems fishy that every single move CC has made in the last two years has managed to benefit Cox in one way or another. Could the home of WSB be positioning themselves to buy the CC cluster when it goes on the block?

Perhaps they realize they are incapable of beating Cox so they have decided to be dominant in the formats Cox is not present in.

cc-atl is not one of their clusters going on the block for sale

do your homework, pleaze

Just because it isn't on the initial list doesn't mean the new CC that is coming down the pike isn't going to divest itself of this turkey.

I've never worked for Cox, but I've worked for CC in two different markets and know quite well how that company works, and to answer your question...ummm...no. End of story. ;D :p

Conspiracy? IMHO no.

Do look for more sales of markets, ranked LARGER than 100. (Not kidding).
2007 will be the year Clear Channel sheds the lowest performers and keeps the big money makers. A sound business plan for any company.

This is the standard operating model for one of the new investors of CC. Shed all unprofitable business and drop all unneeded resources. Make a profit. Begin to grow the company again once profitable.
