Cox Changes in Tulsa

A friend of mne has told me that big changes will happen this week at the Cox building in Tulsa. Anyone know what's up?

I was told K95's PD has already left.

Well, K-95.5's APD is heading to Austin. Last I saw, the PD was still the one doing the search for a replacement.

maybe it's a new 102

From the discussion I was in it sounds like Chris Kelly will move to Ops leader and Steve Hunt is being promoted up the chain. Changes on Star were talked about but I got no details.

So if Chris goes to Ops Manager, who do you think will take over as PD on Spirit?

I can see Keith Marlow taking over as PD for Mix easy. He's a natural choice for that job.

What are these changes on Star? They've got a new PD too don't they?

Didn't KWEN's PD just get promoted to that position from APD like less than a year ago?

What on earth is going on up there?

From my friend over at Cox. The APD is leaving K95 and that position is open. The PD for K95 is on vacation.
If Hunter gets pulled "up the chain" to ATL then Keith may take over at KRAV. He thinks that could happen at some point.
The PD slots on KRMG, Star, Spirit and KWEN are holding steady. The big question is who will take over afternoons/APD on K95 and what is Keith being "groomed" for? Don't expect anything major. I was also told that a sales person went from KRAV to KHTT. (Right before KHTT changed their morning show and their night guy quit.)

Any INSIDE word on the new KHTT morning show? Could there be another swap coming?

What about a replacement PD on KBEZ?

What does the KRMG PD do anyway? Put his/her feet on the desk?

Look at the creative schedule. Everything is entirely syndicated.
I haven't heard the morning show. Is it a call-in show or mostly news and interviews?

Monitor the VU meter to make sure the out of town programs come through well?

Plan the big office Christmas party for all the local hosts, producers, call screeners, etc?

Seems like an easy job.

Plug in only one local show - a morning drive show - then put everything else except for news on auto pilot.

Most music people see talk radio PDs like that. The truth is spoken word formats DONE RIGHT are VERY hard to run. True, keeping the national syndication going right is part of it (more dealing with the syndicator reps really), but there are many more angles to it. Good promotions and appearances, keeping a handle on the overall sound of the station and other factors like making sure news is doing what they should do, protecting the station from having the sales guys overrun it for personal gain....... lots of factors. Keep in mind part of the day is spent also dealing with PR issues from mad listeners that can NEVER be totally satified to (at times) primadona air talent to in-house ego problems including sales and management... etc. etc. I hardly think KRMG's PD has his feet on his desk any more than his FM counterparts. KRMG is still far from being just a joke. It's still a very good talker compared to most.

Looks like I had better info than I thought. I was just told they blew out one of the engineers on Friday with more changes to come. The new guy on K95 sounds too young.

What engineer was blown out? Our CE hasn't heard anything.

Hey JournalGuy tell Ray Klotz I said Hello and hope all is going good for him up there. ;)

Not sure what his name is. I'm guessing they have several engineers? All I know is that he was let go on Friday. My friend at Clear Channel said he'd find out.

It was a remote broadcast engineer. Hard to believe that Cox had a full-time employee just for remotes. I didn't think they did those.

Heard that Shamrock is talking about buying a major Clear Channel station. Didn't sound solid but there's rumors up and down the halls of Clear Channel that Shamrock will put another classic country station on the air late this year.

I got Andy Barber to play me a song today on Star 103 during his lunch hour. He's funny on the phone. I've seen him post here so, HI ANDY!

I'm off to Chicago for the week. Can't wait to hear what a big market sounds like. If I hear anything else I'll let you know when I get back.

A full-time remote engineer? Seems like a waste of money. Not their style.

They do hire great jocks like Andy. He was made for Star 103. When you go to Chicago, you may hear jocks that someday want to sound as good as Andy. Radio there is nothing like the old WLS days.

Check out 104.7 when you are there too.
