Cox changes?

Nothing would surprise me ;D anymore. Let alone this rumor has been going around for about a month now. I'm Surprised how long it took to appear here. Then again this is that users first post so that makes me suspect as well ;)

Whoa! Good point, normally it would show up on here right away. Its been quiet as of late, and now there are rumors of Bubba ending up back on the Tampa airwaves once again. I searched the story on Google after seeing it here and found some stuff on AllAccess.com as well, reporting that he has been seen walking out of the Cox building with a few guys in suits sometime recently within the last few months.

If you remember, when he was on The Morning X with Fisher and Boy he mentioned how he wanted to work at the station "down the hall" and would want to work with Cox if he came back on the Tampa airwaves. Maybe that is what he is actually doing. Who knows. It will be interesting to see.

Bubba would be a perfect fit for the DOVE. He could do mornings with Dick Ring moving to Middays and "Party Marty" doing drive. You could use John Boy and Billy for evenings ( why not) and Trucker Tom Kent overnights.Of course the music would not change. Those old enough to actually like the DOVE grew up on strong personality radio and even WABC played the ballads the DOVE plays.I know John Boy and Billy do Classic Rock and/or Country, so why do Soft AC? Sounds like a winner. AND switch frequencies with 101.5. Bubba could be teamed with Olivia Fox if she would come back from DC. How cool is that!

so glad to see nick or jeff or robert or whatever his new name is has people in his corner. as for the ones he stepped on and over to become who he was, this was a day we were waiting for. nice move by cox!

Nick is an outstanding dude, and his dismissal is disturbing on many fronts inside of Cox radio. They say if you stay loyal and follow the plan you're pretty much bullet proof, but this move proves that is just so much oral fluff. Nick is a really smart dude who "gets it", and some other company will reap the benefits of his skills. Best of luck Nick, you've got people pullin for ya :)

The changes at COX continue. Obviously the hiring of BUBBA to WHPT indicates something. Anybody know why WHPT and not 97X? . Do they feel Classic Rock is a better venue or is it the signal? Are they casting 97X aside in favor of the Bone? Why does the Point seem to developing "personality" as such. Even the fembot on at night is starting to announce cuts and is saying a little more. Why is the Eagle out of all of this? Will WDUV remain as dull as dirt and Magic stay the same after Christmas ? Does this have anything to do with the desconstruction of CC stations around the country and Mix slowing dropping live personalities . Will 97.9 just fade away? However none of them can touch CBS in this market for listener interaction.

Enquiring minds want to know. Or not.

Interesting what Cox is doing with their stations. At least as far as 102.5 The Bone is concerned. I think they are slowly pulling to the side of having The Bone in a more active rock role. To compete with 98Rock. A hybrid of classic rock and todays rock. They have started even playing more 90's rock on the station. Not quite sure what might go on with 97X in all of this. But, I like 97X and hope it stays alternative rock. WHPT be more mixture of todays hard rock and classic rock, as 97X does alternative rock. I think its time for a new rock station with a new attitude, id like to see something like what Las Vegas has with KXTE Xtreme Radio. But, thats a CBS station. With CC stations falling apart left and right and CC stations becoming more of an mp3 player on shuffle, I think it gives Cox a perfect opening at least in this market to pull off something big. Let's all sit back and enjoy.

It looks like Cox has finally decided to break out of the comfort zone, that they were in with CC and CBS. For years it was obvious that there was a tacit agreement, or perhaps more accurately a shared attitude, that the status quo was good enough and there was no need to rock the boat. Everyone seemed content with their place in the order of things so nothing really changed.

Now Cox is coming in with guns blazing in at least one format and making some old fashioned competetive moves. It's going to be interesting to see what happens if Bubba takes down the MJ Morning Show. My guess is that MJ and CC will panic and blame everyone working on MJ's team and shuffle that deck first and make heads roll.

CC has plenty of top drawer talent in the upper ranks and in the trenches at the Gandy Collective, but they're obviously being used as puppets by the San Antonio oligarchy. If MJ goes down, the attrition will start with the low priced help and work its way up. Like the old Communist Party, CC upper-upper management has never made a mistake and any failure to produce desired results will be blamed on the underlings.

Of course, Bob Neal and Company are not the types to admit they've been wrong, either, so if Bubba flops, the heat will be on the Cox Tampa Bay management team.

Grab the popcorn folks. The fun starts right about the time Bubba's first trends come out.

Not only that but you have to remember WXTB has been up and down as far as morning radio goes and I will admit The Buckethead Show is the best thing on 98Rock since Bubba was fired, will this be the nail in coffin for morning drive at WXTB as well?

This will be much longer than a one trend game , war or whatever you want to call it. It will be fun and I'm looking forward to it. Trust me, if you are a real broadcaster with any common sense you'll realize there are a lot of people that could be much worse off than us when this ball gets rolling. Hell we've been all about the "rumors" since I can remember, we'd never beat YNF, Bubba would never work on 98ROCK, Bubba's gone 98ROCK will be spanish in 2 books.... ;D

Wonder what all this will mean for the CBS cluster. They're the only one with a Spanish station and it has a limited signal. Could Cox or CC flip one of their stations (Mix?) to Spanish leaving AC for Q105 mixed with some of their current older stuff?

97X transmitts from Holiday and with their limited signal Cox could put Spanish there leaving Alternative Rock for 101.5 (in addition to their curent playlist). Seems as though the current 97X staff is doing airshifts at The Point anyway. Could this be a case of "Getting the staff used to the format"? The question now is who will do it first, CC or Cox?

A better question will be, when will WTAN go all Spanish. ;D

I'm just wondering how this all plays out.....does the Point go to a voicetracked "Jack" format? Does 97X move or go away? Where does this leave 98ROCK? Some thoughts:

1) The Bone transitions to Active Rock. 97X goes away (format to be named later..perhaps Oldies or Espanol), Point goes Jack, with a hefty portion of Alt/Alt Gold. The above would give a tweaked 98Rock a shot at the young end of 97X's New Rock audience.

B) The Bone continues, but with even more focus on 80's-90's Rock. 97X continues as is (hanging in there, even with it's signal issues, so why tinker? And playlist overlap obviously has never concerned Cox in the past). The Eagle soldiers on as the "traditional" Classic Rocker in town. The Point does something voicetracked with a man's name.

4) The Bone stays as it is now, 97X stays as it is now, The Eagle stays as it is now. The Point stays as it is now. (Knowing Cox, this is the most likely scenario).

I can see Cox put Bubba on 102.5 vs 97.1. The Bone is a better musical fit with the Bubba crowd, which leaves 97X to cater to the younger end of the rock audience with Fisher and Boy.

1) The BONE stays the same. The music works with the new air staff and the signal is great

2) 97X stays the same. Why tinker with failure.

3) Magic stays the same.---------BUT--------Cox flips or evolves the Point to Hot AC. Cox does Hot AC in other markets, but I don't think Cox does "Jack" per se. Then they can bill Magic and the Point together for ALL soccer moms. Mix is obviously floundering and this gives Cox the chance to whack Mix like they whacked Thunder. With the Dove at very soft, Magic in between, and the Point at Hot AC, they could crush Mix.

4) They should flip the Eagle back to Rock AC or AAA. Q105 just does Classic Hits better. However Cox seems to like this format bland, so I don't expect anything here.

Maybe the X isn't based on the narrow demographics and signal. Cox has WDYL in Richmond with the same issues. They are going to move to a stronger signal I believe. I still think the Point should become a personality driven Hot AC . Cox sort of does it in Miami and B98.5 in Atlanta is a personality format by Cox standards and they even have a jingle package. Cox has a Hot AC in Richmond, WMXB, Why not here? Any thoughts on how Cox could rule AC like they took over classic rock when Thunder got whacked.

I think 97X is very much a success, even if it doesn't place in the top two or three (or even ten) in the ratings that often.

Keep in mind the format debuted on a whim more than seven years ago and has remained relatively the same since then. With very little promotion (how many "X" billboards have you seen in seven years? TV spots?!?) and a weak signal, the X bumped off a complacent Star 95.7 and keeps 98 Rock on its toes. As a longtime resident of the area, I even think 98 Rock sounds "old" which is a tip of the hat to the X for keeping things sounding fresh even though the format clock is virtually the same since November 2000.

The biggest issue with the X though (other than lack of promotion and a weak signal) is the aging of the audience. Alternative is a very flukey format-- what was alternative three or four years ago isn't now. The alternative of the early 90's, the music that launched the format 15 or 16 years ago, isn't cool to the kids who were born after Kurt Cobain blew his brains out. How 97X remains relevant to the younger end of the 18-34 demo while keeping the older end of the demo tuned in will be a tough balancing act.

I guess that's how 102.5 gets away with all of the Pearl Jam and Soundgarden it's played recently. Cox keeps the rock crowd, young and old, in the family. Outside of 98 Rock you're not going to hear that early 90s alternative on Clear Channel or CBS stations.
