Cox cost cutting

Officer Jim, long time traffic reporter at Cox owned WDBO in Orlando, was fired yesterday in what was reported to be a, "cost cutting move."
Listen up Cox folk: Traffic and weather are the ONLY reason I(and lot's of other people) listen to WSB AM. If you really want to self destruct then go ahead and fire Herb and Kirk - might as well dump Scott Slade while you're at it. The rest of the day.....might as well just run a 1 kilohertz tone. Metro traffic and The Weather Channel are a waste of electricity - they will not suffice!
Cost cutting should begin at upper management levels. You guys making a few million a year need to take the STEEP cuts.....you're NOT the ones responsible for the profits!!

Who said Cox is planning to fire Cap'n Herb and Kirk "unseasonably cool" Mellish?

It seems to be a trend. No rumors about that happening - I certainly don't want to start one.
I just don't understand why they take long time fixtures like Orlando's Officer Jim and fire 'em - just to save a dollar or two. Someone said on this board that the WSB newsroom may close from 8PM to 4AM - so that's serving the public interest?? It's saving a penny or two and destroying the WSB branding which has taken generations to develope.

That's what you get when you have no competition since WGST threw in the towel.

A couple of points, Tom. The announcement said cost cutting, and that may be the case, but we really don't know. Second--and I don't want to minimize the firing of Officer Jim; he was as much a fixture as morning man Jim Turner--but Cox Radio in Atlanta made a couple of really big senior management cuts in the past year. As far as who brings in profits, it's a combination of a lot of people. Management hires air talent, sales people and engineers; the talent bring in ratings; sales sells the ratings; engineers keep the station on the air and sounding good.

Roddy - you've been around stations enough to know most management is mainly there to give the secretaries putt lessons. Cox is so overloaded with unnecessary management -why does a station need multiple layers of SALES management when in a market this size they mostly just write up orders. Buyers such as yourself do the real strategic planning and campaign assembly - the average sales manager couidn't "manage" a two car funeral......
Why a program director making 6 figure incomes? Boy Bob is the boy genius at Cox - the PDs basically schedule board ops and hire interns.....
You're right - it does take a village(or at least a sheep and two midgets.)And Gawd only knows things would be a real mess if someone like myself were running the show. But the economic "load" has not been shared equally - and yes, I know, it never is - that's life.
It just seems that common sense would dictate leavin' things alone that ain't broke!
