Cox Greenville has been sold

Holy crap! We were just talking about this....

If anything I hope they keep the current formats on the translators. Both Chuck and X98.5 are valuable assets IMO in both diversifying the radio market and I think they should be profitable.

It may be a good thing that former Cox management is involved with the group that bought them (not that I find Cox as a whole to be a great radio group, but maybe they'll at least keep things going in the direction they've been going on the stations here). Can't find out much about Summit Media's other stations, though.

EDIT: Sounds like Summit is a new company?

Surprised at the lack of response to this pretty big news for the GSP market. Anyone else have initial reactions? Thoughts as to what may happen with the new owners?

Don't see JAMZ or it's buffer Hot 98.1 going anywhere. The question will be the translators, which as I posted above, I think should be able to survive with their current formats. One of the articles mentioned that one benefit of the sale to a company run by former Cox folks is that the staff would seemlessly transfer to the new owners (time will tell about that one).

I don't think there will be much change since it will be operated by existing Cox people. I do think we can expect, though, that the playlists may loosen up a bit (Cox is notorious for tight, predictable playlists).

If this were a sale to a company like Cumulus, it'd be a bigger deal IMO, but I doubt this will yield much change. I DO still think 107-3 Jamz could EASILY be taken on by another station. That share could easily be taken down a few notches. If that happened, it'd be curtains for Hot and Jamz would have to work a little harder.

That would be great as far as X98.5 goes. Love to see them open up to be more like WKZQ, Radio 104.5 or even The End in Charlotte (minus the active crap).

I should mention that a sent a message via FB to X98.5 regarding this and they said they don't plan on going anywhere (which, of course, what else can you expect them to say). But they also said, "did you see this?" pointing to the link for the change to the X station in Jacksonville that's now "listener driven" in its playlist. As much as I like to recommend stuff they play, I think it'd be a disaster if they'd do that here and said as much in my reply. So hope that wasn't signaling any potential change in that direction.

There probably would only be a real handful of people really active in something like that and probably end up with a lot of repetition and/or songs that don't belong together as an "alternative" format goes.

^^ Opps, meant to say that it was Tampa Bay that's trying that.

In addition to the concerns I mentioned, I'd also fear people with taste like The Planet trying to hijack the station....and that's certainly not needed.

Anyway, hope X at least continues what their doing and hopefully improve in perhaps widening their playlists (like more non-grunge 90s, of course  :) )

The new owners are a consortium of the Cox market managers. Basically the managers in the departing markets bought the stations. Doesn't sound like a situation where you will see many changes immediately.
