Cox in Miami

Cox is clearly the top radio company in South Florida as far as ratings go. Of the top 4 stations in 6+, Cox has 3.

Hot 105 #1
99 Jamz #2
Easy 93.1 #4

And Coast comes in at #9. So it's very impressive.

Since Cox, in many of it's other markets, is taking it's heritage news/talk station and putting it on FM, do you ever think they might try to start up a news/talk FM in Miami? I don't think they are maxed out in terms of purchasing a station. I doubt with the good ratings they get on their current FM's that they would ever consider blowing one up for this. But it's a thought.

(I had thought they were going to be the company to pick up 104.3 and move it south from West Palm.)

They have so far added an FM simulcast to
WSB Atlanta
WDBO Orlando
WHIO Dayton
and, most recently, WOKV Jacksonville (where they moved the FM simulcast from a small Class A to a full Class C signal.)

Talk is pretty lucrative and the only competition in Miami is WIOD, who Cox used to own (and who are not exactly taking the market by storm)

Coast would be the only viable option for Cox to install Talk on the FM dial. However, the growth of conservative talk on FM seems to have stalled. The latest thinking is that the listening demographic is too old. Moreover, conservative talk is not exactly a thriving format in Miami. WIOD is a great example.

Yeah they won't flip Coast after all the money they just spent for a new PD and changing logos. I saw their van with a new logo on it this past weekend in Miami Beach. I think they are ready to give 93.9 a good run for their money and if three out of their four stations are too five they are happy. Plus no other station group can claim that kind of success in Miami, why mess with it.

And as for bringing news talk, who would be stupid enough to do that. I'm still waiting on Clear Channel to realize how much money they can save by putting 940 on 105.9 or 93.9 and save the money to just simulcast? Then I would put WIOD on the other frequency and maybe do the Evolution format on 100.3 translator in Broward county.

Again, the real issue is that the Miami MSA is over 50% Hispanic. The over-40 Hispanic population tends to be considerably more Spanish dominant than the younger segment, so there is a huge segment that could not and would not listen to English language talk in the WSB WOKV Cox model.

Add in the fact that African Americans underindex for that kind of talk, and the other fact that a significant percentage of Miami Blacks are Kreyol speakers and you have further reductions in the potential listener base.

WIOD is not getting big numbers due to the demographics of the market first, and due to programming second.
