Cox looking to sell KIRO?

Maybe, but perhaps there are still people in play that can make these decisions. Buying KIRO might indeed be a no-brainer. But all bets are off. Stay-Tuned!

The Last Time we seen CBS converting a contract CBS affiliate into an O&O was in 2005 when CBS bought KOVR 13 Sacramento from Sinclair and in that process CBS was moving the KMAX (UPN in 2005/ CW affiliate in 2018) to the KOVR offices in Sacramento at the time of purchase . Back then when that was taking place the Redstones were in talks with the National Amusements board to split CBS from Viacom at the time when CBS got KOVR 13 and also during that time CBS was in talks to make the CW and shutting down UPN during this change. I'm saying its possible for CBS to get KIRO but unlikely today given CBS's current management reforms after Moonves, the Viacom talks and attempts to make All-Access compete against Netflix and Hulu are the bigger priorities CBS has to deal with today.

Now EW Scripps, Tegna and Hearst are named as candidates to get the Cox stations including KIRO-TV

The TEGNA possibility is interesting in that it opens another domino situation just like when Belo was involved before with both a potential KING, KONG, and KIRO acquisition. CW/CBS wound up doing well on that deal before Cox came in and changed the game plan almost immediately. Wonder who would be spun (and who spun to) should TEGNA be the winning bidder.

Yeah, just months ago we thought Trib or Sinclair would have to spin off. How quickly things change. And they could change again. I'm not sure Tegna wouldn't prefer KIRO at this point due to better revenue projections. Yet, KING has a proud history. Not sure that is enough to make them keep it. Interesting times ahead.

TEGNA would have to spin at least one station. Having all three would put them over the ownership cap for the market size. If they really wanted to get creative like other groups have, they could spin one of the stations to a third party (aka straw man) and do an LMA with that station. That being said, other groups have had their hand slapped for trying that tactic when in reality they've been in full control of all the stations.

If Tegna wins, I would think CBS would take the opportunity to buy KIRO. Hello...it's a very large market with tons of potential for a big 4 network O&O. They already own KSTW which used to have a newscast produced by KIRO, some 15 years ago. Of course, they'd like turn KIRO into 'CBS 7' like all of their other O&Os.
