Cox radio SA needs to...

add HD2 channels! Suggestions:

KISS HD2 - unsigned/Texas/heavy metal or alternative

KONO HD2 - 50s-60s oldies (or put on AM simulcast)

KCYY HD2 - KKYX simulcast (classic country)

KSMG HD2 - new AC

KPWT HD2 - old school hip hop

Maybe Cox is planning to wait until there are enough HD2 listeners that they can actually run spots and bill to pay for the separate programming on those signals? Without a revenue stream, HD2 channels are just another competitor for the main signal.

I realize it's a chicken-and-egg proposition, but without a mandate to use HD2 channels for separate programming, I find it hard to fault station groups that choose not to do it for their focus on the bottom line.

Cox believes there can only be one top station in each market/cluster, and they love flanking stations so HD channels could be thought of as Flankers for KISS. However you would want a flanker to take out the beat. Power is trying that.

That leaves somethng to take out the jukebox "Jack FM" but Magic is doing that.

That means HD would have to either be a new revenue stream or something out of the box.

Cox and out of the box do not go hand in hand.

I think Cox will sit on this a long lOOOOOOOOONG LOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME.

daypart has hit on the perfect description of the HD problem nobody talks about... "chicken or the egg"...
Why will anyone buy an HD radio when there is nothing different to hear?
Why will stations put anything more than an automated juke box on an HD channel unless there is someone (ANYONE?) to hear it?

CHICKEN about having no EGGS-HA

If Cox wants to sell current stations and spots on HD...It is their job to...

1. Get people to listen to HD

2. Sell the spots.

No excuses man. You can purchase an HD radio for around $300 now. So give some away...do gigs at car lots with HD radio in the vehicles...talk up how cool it is...(make it cool with unique formats on the hd channels).

The truth be told...there is no excuse for any cluster to not make a profit with HD radio...

The truth be told...it still takes money to make money...(except in corporate radio where we sell what appears to be increased profits - based on our ever slashed budgets)...They want to garnish cash without the cost of providing anything to anyone...jockless...(not talent fees)...jukebox...(no PD costs)...Hope someone listens...(no ad budget for HD stations)...No promotion events....(saves money)

What a bunch of idiots...

If they never turn a dime of profit again...IT IS ALL THEIR OWN GREEDY FAULT....AND STOCKHOLDERS ARE LIKE LISTENERS....THEY ARE GETTING WISE TO ALL OF THIS SMOKE AND MIRRORS CRAP.

THANK GOD!

They can't give those HD radios. I understand WAMU in DC gave away a hundred of them to promo their HD launch. People had so much trouble tuning in the HD signal they gave up. So much for the winners spreading the virtues of HD Radio by word of mouth.

HD radio will only work when the stations put power behind it. Maybe they should take a page from the HDTV playbook. Broadcast HD radio at full power... or close to it... on an alternate channel to establish the audience. And then shut down the analog at some given date.

Willis...Hey man I have an HD radio in my car, and I have not prob tuning in clear channel HD2 channels.

I can't say what WAMU did wrong. Again that is/was their job to get it right. If it was a new fm and the listeners could not tune it in, would you suggest they not do radio at all?

I was hoping someone would chime in about how ludy it is that these companies with fat wallets are doing way less than the independents did with far less money.

How they are slash slash slashing RADIO to DEATH.

PEACE...

Wouldn't that be a new thread? This one is about HD.

Why is everyone trying to push HD. Sure it can sound great if you can pick it up. The transmitters are only like 1000 watts and won't go up in power. It's not like you can drive all of SA and pick up these stations. At least the HD in my BMW can't get some stations Downtown or out by Schertz.

The industry is pushing it. The radio companies are pushing it. Theoretically HD is our opportunity to offer more formats on additional signals at higher quality (MUCH higher in the case of AM). More "stations" and more revenue ultimately.

More formats? What new formats are there...really?
We bitc& about market share shrinking because of Ipods, Sirius and the like...then we come up with another way we can screw ourselves. This business is already messed up from other outside sources. We should be figuring out ways to make our own products better...not dilute them more.

Hey Blow-

I just attended an over the phone conference with Arbitron yesterday that exposed some cool news about this topic!
Anyone can view the stats presented in slide form at Arbitron.com.

Radio losing listeners to IPOD/Digital Players & Satellite is proven as a myth. The users of these platforms overwhelmingly intend to continue to listen just as much to AM & FM now as before using IPOD's & Satellite radio.

HD would enhance our product not dilute it. At least that is what I believe.

I was worried about the same thing and quoted the idea as fact, but for those who love facts on paper the opposite is true. Thank God.

HD needs to get the buggs out and would make AM&FM more competitive to Satellite.
However, the growth of satellite radio "awareness" has dropped slightly in the past 2 years.
Many news stories hit the public about the pending merger of the 2 companies xm/Sirrius but the number of people
learning about Satellite has declined.

They will have to merge and market to get that platform back in the top of minds of Americans.

Also with the price of gasoline rising, people may not want to spend cash for something that they can get for FREE.

So there may be 1 small good thing for radio folks from the rising cost of gas.

Hey Blow...HA HA...YOU GOT ME THERE.

I freaked them out twice by asking the simple question....

"When you have the required number of respondents to create a book, do you continue through 3 full months anyways or stop and print the thing and leave it on the shelf to release it later...

Meaning you could acquire enough respondents in a month and save the money.

Knowing that was a possibility meant we could front load our book/contests and win for less money...

They deny this...but front loading worked for me...

HA

So did putting the best talent on Afternoons for a while and then doing More Music mornings...
