Cox Selling Connecticut Stations

well this sucks. Local radio in Fairfield County is just gone.

Why? You don't even know who's buying them. COX doesn't even know who's buying them!

I'd think Townsquare is a candidate. I don't know who else who operates in the Northeast would be eligible and/or interested

if townsquare buys them do you mean I would not have to go to Missula Montana to get a kickass rock station to listen to ;)

In all seriousness, I have had a chance to work with many at COX there and I still miss it. I doubt they will but any chances Clear Channel might want to buy them using the excuse were near the NYC Market ?

Well as long as John Fuller doesn't buy them we should be safe.

I hope Clear Channel doesn't, Maybe Buckley Should buy them? I rather see Buckley pick them up rather than CC.

Don't think Buckley is in a buying mood. Could this turn out to be Cumulus' way to gain a more substantial presence in Connecticut? I'm rooting for local, too, but realistically, I expect the buyer to be a chain and run the stations on the cheap. It wii be interesting to see what the new owner does with the WYBC arrangement. It's unique in Connecticut, so it might not be to the liking of an outsider ownership group.

Clear Channel definitely can't pick up WFOX due to ownership limits. I'd have to see the BIA reports to be sure, but I believe CC may also be at ownership limits when it comes to WEZN and WPLR as well.

Someone with more knowledge than me may be able to speak to the Cumulus ownership situation too... That part of the state gets tricky where markets start to overlap and a station that's "home" to one market may also be in another market. Stations in NYC affect ownership in the Stamford/Norwalk market, sometimes LI stations come into play, WEZN and/or WPLR may have issues with Hartford numbers when it comes to ownership... it gets complicated for the big guys.

John Fuller is an interesting thought.... My personal and professional opinions of him aside, he might have the coin and he's in the growing mood. He just bought a translator in Bridgeport and it's kind of been up in the air what he's going to do with it... Running a Spanish or other format HD2 on the translator off one of the Cox stations could be the end game.

I hope that the buyer of Cox's Connecticut stations makes major changes to WFOX 95.9. It is a truly boring classic rock station with a very limited and predictable play list. The area has plenty of other classic rock stations; perhaps it could be flipped to something else.

95.9 the fox used to kick ass when I was younger. For the one that buys it, I hope it is rock with a broad playlist for the reason of events that cater to the 25-35 audience like concerts, bars & events. It would be nice to be a community again local to Stamford and Norwalk where everyone cares because you can actually listen to the station all day. Most NYC stations did not care about Stamford or Norwalk its like we did not exist and growing up with 92.3 K-rock that is how I felt. When I did Promotions at WRKI 95.1 (cumulus) they did a great job with the local scene, but I don;t listen to the station much... why? same reason as the Fox, the same predictable playlist but a little bit broader playlist than the FOX. What about CCC while growing up? I could not get to their events when I was 16 or bother to ask my parents and a lot of times I did not know about a cool event. At least I found a job for now working as a travel councilor so I enjoy finding stuff to do throughout CT everyday just finding events to go to with someone now that is the tough part. I had difficulty growing up socially.

If it were me buying the stations I'd flip 95.9 to news-talk to make up for the loss of WSTC/WNLK.

I agree. To have nothing on the dial for local information and three NPR drones on the AM dial does not constitute "... in the public interest" when it comes to serving the community.

I don't think a new owner would do any too drastic to WPLR. It's a heritage Rock & Roll radio station, unless EMF buys the station for their K-LOVE Network. *gag* (no offense to the people who like K-LOVE's programming, but I would never forgive them if they destroyed a heritage station).

I'm not sure what would happen with Star 99.9 maybe give it direction. At night (and parts of the weekend) it sounds very CHRish. During the day it sounds very HOT ACish.

I'm sure Entercom could use one of Cox's FM's (WPLR, perhaps?) as a Connecticut satellite for WEEI...

Once you get down to New Haven, you're getting into solid New York sports loyalty. EEI's not going to fly there, although the locals would probably enjoy the EEI hosts ripping into the underachieving Red Sox. You'd think Entercom would be more interested in a Hartford signal.

Depending on price, I would think it might make a nice acquisition for Connecticut based Connoisseur Media since, if I remember, didn't they just acquire some stations on the island? An entry into the market with a station co-located with their corporate offices could be a possibility.

I think it's a shame that Cox sold off 96.7, 1400 and 1350 only months before they decided to sell EVERYTHING. Clearly there was still value in the WSTC/WNLK News-Talk format.

Cox gave FM simulcasts to nearly all their other AM News-Talk stations to keep the format going as fewer people listen to FM... WSB Atlanta, WDBO Orlando, WOKV Jacksonville, WHIO Dayton, WRMG Tulsa all got FM simulcasts. They should have simulcast the News-Talk format on 96.7 rather than selling it, then maybe sell/donate 1400 and 1350 to Sacred Heart University after a several months of simulcasting.
