Cox Should Jack Its Four Florida Stations

P

Guest
This will be on the Miami, Orlando, Tampa & North Florida boards. Cox should flip its Jacksonville & Tampa stations to "Jack" clones, modeled after Cox's 98-9 WMMO in Orlando.

Here it is!

Miami: WFLC (Dropping the "Coast" AC Format)
Orlando: WMMO (Has been Floida's first adult hits station)
Tampa: WPOI (Dropping "Point" 80's Format)
Jacksonville: WMXQ (Also Dropping 80's)

Why doesn't Cox "jack" WHDR (93.1) in Miami instead of WFLC?

It already HIJACKED it twice, screwing classical fans in 2001
and then party listeners this year.

Because this market needs a Rock station and Cox needs a solid biller, and Jack hasn't proved Jack yet

Cox just isn't going to run a playlist much over 400, tops.

Then what are Y-100 (oops Y-100.7)
and Big 106 (oops Big 105.9) if not Rock?

When has Y-100 EVEr been Rock??!!
WHYI Y-100 is a Top 40 station, always has been.
Big 106 is a Classic Rock station, meaning no new or recent Rock is played on 105.9 FM.

When Y-100 started, Top 40 *WAS* rock.

Exactly when did they diverge?

Now they call themselves "60s & 70s" just like WOLL.

Would the change to Jack make it much worse?

Majic just had a huge jump in their Spring Part I trend; top 5; haven't seen that in a while. No way will they flip; since they can play everything up to 1979, I've heard Steve Miller's The Joker on 102.7 a few times; kind of cool, and they don't bleep anything. Besides Majic's a cash cow for Jefferson-Pilot Miami, keyword Jefferson-Pilot. NOT Infinity; JP's doesn't have a lot of people working in their radio division that seem as crazy about heritage stations flipping to unchartered waters.

Believe it or not, 102.7FM post-K102 has been WMXJ-FM, Magic 102/Majic 102.7 since March of '85; it's a heritage South FL station. Maybe second generation, but heritage. Same thing for WLYF, though all the position changes from WLYF Beautiful Music, WLYF FM 101, all the way to 101.5 LITE FM. Same calls and premise since, what, 1969/70? Someone find the retired Ron King and double check this with him. :)

WOLL/105.5 dropped that 60s/70s line about 2 years ago; they went to a slightly more Rhythmic AC sound to go after 104.3's core demo after that Music of the 60s, 70s, and more line.....they beat Sunny 12+ one book I think...

If anyone, 97.3 go JACK; leave Majic alone.

I don't know what defines a "heritage station".
I remember when they signed on as WRBD-FM, as an R&B station.
Then, they switched to WCKO (no connection with WCKR or WCKT).
Every hour, the legal ID included, "...and it's dual polarized", not that anyone knew what that meant, but everyone else was still horizontal only.

They moved from a three hundred foot stick in Tamarac (a WRBD tower) to a TV tower near County Line Road the same night that WCMQ-FM changed from 92.1 to 92.3 because two stations in the same market can not be 10.6 or 10.8 Mhz apart.
______________

Does that relate to the BFO or harmonic or image or something?
(I used to know that stuff!)

Yeah, the 10.7Mhz IF Freq. There was a big stink when WEDR (99.1) wanted to move to a TV tower after WKPX (88.5) came on the air. One of the issues was that back then, radios radiated 10.7 Mhz above what they were tuned to, so if the guy in the car next to you was listening to Coast 97.3, he would wipe out your Country-K 107.9.
______________

Y-100 was famous in the 70s for playing a good amount of Disco tunes actually.

I don't recall an exact year, but I think Y-100 predates disco.

Anyone remember?

How clean are the ears? Since when is Y-100 rock? It is top 40 for goodness sakes. Big 105.9 is a classic rock format, quite different than a modern rocker.

Regardless, in 2005 they are most definitely not rock. Top 40 nowadays has a small portion of rock but that certainly is not the entire chart.

Yes it might because Jack runs and jocks are gone. No more Ricky Ticky Shaw.

As for the other posts saying South Florida needs a Rock station....That's all part of the scam. There are many splintered rock formats it's unreal. There is:

Top 40 Rock
Active Rock
Classic Rock
Modern Rock
Album Rock
Metal
Alternative

So give these people 7 different kinds of Rock and maybe they will be happy and for the rest of us who want something quite a bit different well there's always the iPod which is like Jack but it plays what I want.

We ask for one oldies station or one classical station and get crud about it!

There is so much music out there that doesn't get play on any station thank God for the internet. If I want to find new music that I enjoy I go there, not radio.

I remember in the early and mid 1980s Y100 played more dance and urban crossover product and less rock than most of their CHR counterparts did nationwide. So Y100 has not only been CHR forever, they have also been a non-rock leaning station for most of their history.

Fine... But from the point of view of someone who'd like to listen
to Jazz or Classical or Oldies, none of which is represented in
this market any more, the distinction you make between Y-100 and
a rock station is so irrelevant it's ludicrous.

Do you think I appreciate or even care whether Y-100 plays all or
only part of the rock chart? ;-)
