Cox tinkering with "The Point" format??

Just got this blurb in the afternoon headlines: Cox adjusts Houston format.
Aiming to take a bite out of top-rated alternative “The Buzz” KTBZ, Cox Media Group launched a classic alternative in Houston today. “106.9 The Zone” replaces ’80 hits “The Point” with alternative gold from the ‘80s and ‘90s, including Pearl Jam, U2, Foo Fighters, Green Day, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Matchbox 20.

Does anyone think this might hit Tampa too? Looks like they are moving the decade a little more into the 90's.

The station in Houston is a LAME classic alternative. It's very female AC radio friendly. I sampled it yesterday and thought it sounds a lot like the newly repositioned Point in Tampa Bay. I'd say the Point has already moved that direction just without the name change. Research probably shows just shifting the format into some modern AC 90's will keep it fresh and that's what they've done. No need to change the name like they did in Houston. They're trying to re-image the station there based on competition. It's not necessary here.

There is a Houston rock station ("The Buzz") that they are going after. That was mostly the reason Houston's "Point" flipped to "The Zone."

But Cox owns the "alternative" station here. So they would be competing against themselves.

In a way, they already are. Quite a bit of playlist crossover between The Bone and 97X these days since 102.5 added more 90's grunge titles.

Why can't the Point just be axed already. Cox can just switch to another format and take what they already play on "The Point" and put it on "107.3 The Eagle". The Point has no future. 107.3 is Arbitron rated # 5 in Tampa while the Point is #13. Just consolidate the Playlists on both stations. Add some more songs and make a True Classic Hits Station.

So what is Cox doing with the Dove. Today they play "Evil Woman" by Santana and "Fleetwood Mac"'s "Leather and Lace"------Is this Soft and Easy ? Maybe WDUV becomes classic hits, the Eagle becomes classic rock and WPOI becomes HOT AC? You could turn The Bone into all talk with Bubba and Cowhead still in place plus add Dennis Miller, Michael Savage, and people I never heard of. I presume those two" hot talkers' are available, but if not I assume there are more. Maybe Slater does talk?

"Leather and Lace" can pass itself off as a Dove-friendly song. But whether it's "Evil Ways" by Santana or "Evil Woman" by ELO, that's definitely a radical shift from Dove's current playlist, even after they first purged the instrumentals.

Let me know when they play Boston's "lite" classic "More Than A Feeling."

Excuse the mistakes in song titles and artists. That is why the Dove posts it's songs on the "internets" for AARPies like me who just learned to use The Google. I thought "leather" was Lindsay Buckingham.

It's close enough. Leather and Lace is actually a Stevie Nicks solo artist song; However, since Stevie was once the lead singer for Fleetwood Mac, the song can easily be mistaken as a song belonging to Fleetwood Mac as the voice is the same.

It was actually Stevie Nicks and Don Henley from Nicks' album "Bella Donna." I have a great "back-back" stage story about Don and I when I worked at what was then Lite Rock 95.7 when he preformed a solo concert in Tampa back in the day. I'll take it to my grave, although I did tell it to the chick that cuts my hair.

Yep, you are correct. Don Henley did sing with Stevie Nicks on that particular song which I had forgotten although I well remember the Bella Donna album (now CD).

It should've been 'performed'.

Even though I am senile, I heard other definitely 80's cuts on the DOVE including something by Phil Collins I never heard them play before. Now back to Gran Torino.

They played Gerry Rafferty last night. Can Steve Forbert be far behind. Scanned the Dove playlist and no sign of Manilow. If they don't play him, who will? Now back to breakfast and another empty day scanning playlists

You know when Cox purchased WHPT there was something behind out. I mean what if "The Bone" had the same transmitter site as WWRM and WPOI. Both WWRM and "The Point" have signals that can reach the Orlando Market right. With WHPT's transmitter out of Sarasota Cox doesn't have to worry about that station competing with WHTQ 96.5. Which is also owned by Cox. Call me a lunatic but you never know.
