Coyote Last Show Today On KLBJ-FM

[NOTE: I did not read this in an article, I heard it on-air. I am typing this information from memory.]

Today (09/02/2021) was the last “Coyote” show on KLBJ-FM. Coyote was Matt Bearden, Abby Rosenquist (she was not on the last show today or yesterday, I don’t know how long she has been off the show), and producer, Spencer Williams. It was on from 3 – 6 PM weekdays.

Matt Bearden and Spencer Williams are joining CJ Morgan on 101X starting Tuesday (09/07/2021) from 3 – 6 PM.

LA Lloyd, who previously had the 3 – 6 PM slot, will get that slot back.

(Abby called in before the end of the show.)

Waterloo Media both has my respect for some moves and my annoyance at others. On one hand they seem to be fairly dedicated to local talent and trying creative scheduling and pairing.

On the other hand, they seem to muzzle or can people who don't fit the owner's politics:

1. Banning political discussion from the KLBJ (FM) morning show
2. Firing Deb from 101X (allegedly for political reasons)
3. Firing Jeff Ward from KLBJ (AM) (again, he didn't fit their politics)

Meanwhile, KLBJ (AM) personalities are allowed to be as political as they wish (as long as it's the right politics.) But we can't have an opposing ideological view on a heritage show based in honesty from the hosts (Dudley + Bob, Deb + Jason.) It's Austin, guys. A little moderation or liberalism won't ruin you.

But I'm glad Matt and Spencer still have jobs. And the show with CJ could be good.

The new show on 101X featuring CJ Morgan and Matt Bearden with Spencer Williams producing did not debut on Tuesday as planned. CJ is physically hurting with something broken so they are now planning to start on Monday (09/13/2021).

Andy Travis,

You might (or might not) be interested in the latest KLBJ-FM Morning Show “drama”.

They claim it is NOT a bit, and, it probably is not, as far as I can tell, from the outside looking in.

Let’s see, where to start.

[I did not take any notes so I don’t have any exact dates, this is all from my memory from listening to their show. Everything I tell you is from my memory as a listener, I have no inside information.]

Apparently some “big” family problem came up in the Dale Dudley household. They have not told us what that incident was about.

It upset Dale so much that he went to Academy and bought a 9 mm Ruger. Over the years, he always jokes about going to Academy to get a pistol to kill himself. Apparently someone, (maybe his wife?) called the authorities (police) and they found Dale with the gun still in the box while he was at some store (it might have been a Starbucks or something like that).

They took him to a mental health facility in Georgetown. I think they took him there on a Friday. I think the law says you can’t hold someone more that 72 hours without making some type of determination on their condition to hold or release them. They do not count weekends and holidays in that 72 hours. I think Monday was a holiday so it was probably Labor Day (09/06/2021).

That meant they could keep him Saturday, Sunday, and Monday and the 72 hours did not even start. I think they were going to release him on Friday but someone stepped in and got him out “early” on Thursday.

He said he was not going to kill himself, he only wanted to show how much stress he was under so it was only a call for help.

The following Monday, Dale was back in the studio and on some prescription drugs. Matt (Bearden) was listening to the show in his car while taking one of his children to school. Matt thought Dale was messing up too much to be running the board.

When Matt got to the studio, he asked Dale if he wanted to discuss this on air or off air. Dale told him he wanted to discuss this on air.

Dale (incorrectly) thought Matt was telling him that he should not be on the air because the drugs he was taking were causing him to mess up while running the board. What Matt was really telling him was that he was ok to be on the air, but not to be running the board. There were a few board mistakes but Dale attributed it to not being set up properly from the last user.

Dale yelled at everyone (including Chuy, but he later said that was a joke going back to the Daniel days) and left.

Management wanted to give Dale 5 days off to adjust to his new medicine but Dale convinced them he did not need the time off.

Matt left the show and has not been back since. Matt told the bosses he quit the KLBJ-FM show and will only be on the 101X show with CJ.

I think that about covers it. Maybe someone from KLBJ-FM can correct, confirm, or add to this.

[Bob Fonseca said he will be on YouTube live tonight at 10 PM (09/21/2021) to answer any questions. Maybe you or someone here will be able to watch it and add to this if he tells any more details (if you are interested). I don't know the name of the channel he will be on, he didn't say.]

Wow, thanks for the update. They hadn't posted a podcast from that day so what exactly went down before Dale's time at the facility and the day of the Dale/Matt incident I wasn't clued into. Appreciate the details.

I don't know what exactly to make of the 101X thing. The music's changed to my ears - I've listened to a bit of Matt and CJ but I'm not really sure about the strategy of it all. Like, as a podcast these sorts of shows work but I don't know that most of their target audience necessarily wants the music with it or vice versa. Time will tell.

I've learned a little bit, very little bit, more this week by listening to the show and Bob's YouTube videos. I'll try to listen tomorrow morning (Friday) and then write what I know so far...which isn't really very much more than what you already know.

After listening to two out of three of Bob’s latest YouTube videos (the name of his channel is “Bob Fonseca LIVE from his Media Room”) and a lot of the Morning Show the past week, I’ll add the little (very little) that I have learned about the drama concerning the KLBJ-FM Morning Show.

The situation at the Dale Dudley home that probably was the main catalyst of causing Dale to purchase the gun was said to be a “threat to his family”. That is all I learned about that part. I assume that was a threat to some or all of the Dudley family from someone else.

That threat apparently caused some mental condition for Dale and he was taken to a mental health facility. The following Monday, I could tell by his voice that something was wrong. Whenever he is depressed or having mental problems, his voice changes. To keep this short, I’ll just describe it as sounding like he has a cold. It could be caused from his mental condition, the medication, or a combination of those. I think “the guys” and management thought he sounded like he was drunk or on drugs.

I did learn that Bob recognized something was wrong with Dale so he texted Matt to hurry up and drop his kid off at school and get to the studio as soon as possible.

Dale asked if they really thought something was wrong with him. Bob said he did because Dale was slurring his words and tried to grab the mic but kept missing it because of poor depth perception.

When Matt got to the studio he was really adamant that something was wrong with Dale. He thought Dale was messing up on the board too much. He thought Dale was ok to stay and be on the air but he didn’t think he should be running the board.

I guess Matt (and the rest of them) pushed it so much that Dale cussed at them when he left.

Matt has not been back to the Morning Show since then.

Bob said that Matt was not getting any extra pay for doing both shows (the Morning Show and 101X show) so he was basically a volunteer for the Morning Show once the 101X show started.

Someone asked Bob (in the video chat) if it was “real”. Bob said it is real and that we don’t know the whole story but “some people are working out some things”.

Dale asked Chuy to book Matt as a guest so he can ask him if he was the reason he left the show.

Dale said he went to management to try to convince them that Matt needs to stay with the Morning Show but Matt has no reason to stay because he would not be getting paid for it.

[This is my opinion. I think Dale, Bob, and Chuy are probably telling the truth that this is not a bit. My feeling (guess) is that Matt was intentionally over reacting and playing it up to tell Dale he should not be on the board. I think Matt was probably told by management not to discuss in detail his move from the Morning Show to 101X so he used it as a “bit” to leave the Morning Show without telling the others. That is just a guess on my part.]

In summary, the new things I learned were:
1) the situation that started all this was a “threat” to the Dudley family
2) that Matt blowing up about Dale’s condition was not a bit according to Dale and Bob
3) that Matt was moved from the Morning Show to 101X without any extra pay to stay with the Morning Show

Dale said something new happened but he can not talk about it on the air.

Dale left the show early on Friday for some “family emergency”.
