Coyote/Tom Humm

Beasley has ACTUALLY done something RIGHT! Hiring Tom Humm...In return, he has KKLZ go back to what makes sense...and they come up with Junefest...KKLZ sounds GREAT! Thank god they have an oldies GURU in Larry Martino....with the urban pop classics, it gives KKLZ the balance they need musically.
Now Tom Humm hires Justin Chase as P.D. of Coyote! KWNR is DONE! Justin is one of only 3 PD's in Vegas who "get it." KLUC's Cat Thomas, and Sunny's Tom Chase are the other 2! KWNR doesn't have the courage to use the assets they have on their station properly, and within 6-12 months will pay the ULTIMATE price for that! Coyote just needs to tie up a few loose ends and KWNR will be history! For one...get someone to do nights versus the voicetracked Michigan guy on KWNR...(when a station has good night numbers, mornings follow...they go to bed and wake up with that particular station) KWNR has only 2 assets on their station, Bob Bishop, and especially Country Chuck. KWNR has very little local content. The more local Coyote can go(insert night guy please) the sooner KWNR will have to change formats!

Does Justin have country experience?

Justin has programming experience. Good programmers can do all formats. Jimmy Steal had no hip-hop experience when he took over Power 106 in L.A. and proceeded to be #1 for six years.

However what you animals fail to realize is... it's still Beasley! It will fail.

KCYE has been the #1 Country station the last two months. KKLZ is a continuous winner. KDWN is up and Now made significant inroads in May against two very good stations: Hot and KLUC. Seems like Beasley is in a great position in Vegas.

Nevada is a right to work state, like they REALLY care! This isn't California. You are an "at will" employee and can be fired anytime for any reason.
They may have posted it once somewhere, anywhere, and that covers their butt. While Justin has no country experience, he is a GREAT programmer. KDWN is FINALLY making money for the first time in YEARS. KLUC wasn't making a ton of money before Tom got there, and he hired Alan Eisenson, a good talk programmer who hatched KXNT...He also did well at Mix/Jack. Tom has made $$$ anywhere he has been...KMJJ in 1980, KXTZ when they were beautiful music, KFMS under the Doug Shane 10 share days...then KLUC for many years. Of course, having Rick Denton as your GSM of KDWN isn't hurting matters there. Tom hires good people and lets them do their jobs. If you do what you say you are going to do, he will treat you well. He "GETS IT!"

By all accounts, "Junefest" was a resounding flop. The venue was less than half-full and the show wasn't even reviewed by a single paper or magazine. It was almost as much of an insult to KKLZ's former listeners as Beasley's decision to keep the call letters of a heritage classic rock station while pretending that heritage never existed.

They'll do much better with the "Disco Bash," because (unlike "Junefest") they actually spent money to advertise it, and it's much closer to what the station is all about these days.

Tom Humm's a good man. His bosses are clueless jerks.

His bosses are definitely clueless, I agree.. Tom is a good man as is Harry Williams their first GM. Harry is a class act from the word go!(I am so out of the loop...lol) Anyone know where he is at these days? Speaking of good GM's, wonder whatever happened to Mike Ginsburg!
If Beasley spent money where they should, it would be a miracle...Wasted all that cash on NOW and FLUSH(Fresh) 2 god awful radio products... If they spent money on KKLZ and Coyote, they would be kicking ass...

Now had a pretty big month 18-34 after only 60 days... rather close to KVEG.

Let's see how NOW does when their month of TV falls out....and will new owner do the smart thing and take down Mix? If they don't go after MIX, they will fail like "Fresh"...no doubt...You can't voice track a format that has such as active audience as Top 40 and succeed. Why do you think KCYE is beating KWNR...KWNR is live in one daypart, mornings...middays are VT, Bob Bishop is busy doing production, mostly VT...Coyote is live in 3 dayparts to their one...now will Mitch Kelly be middays? and if Coyote ever went live on nights versus the dude from Michigan on KWNR, KCYE would be the ONLY contry station within one year! Good radio is poised for a comeback...As corporate America sells off their assets, some mom and pop owners will get back into the game and work smart. (something the big idiots couldn't do...they made their bed, now they will take their losses and go home!)

I highly doubt that NOW will stay jockless after Ed Stolz takes over. They probably would have been staffed already if it wasn't for the sale. Here's antidotel evidence that leads me to believe they couldn't go live soon enough. A store I go to had KLUC on for years. Then in April through June they switched to NOW. Now they are back to KLUC.

As for the country race, COYOTE will win 18-34 in the Spring book because of the huge spike in May. But 25-54 (and 12+ for that matter) are extremely close. The two stations are practically tied. Whoever wins June will win it all.

I wonder if the frequency swap will hurt KCYEs recent momentum? I heard their "move it on over" campaign tied to a cash contest. That's a good idea but this will still create confusion which I would expect to work to KWNRs advantage, at least in the short term.

As for VTing, I heard that Bob Bishop is more live than voicetracked and that Cadillac Jack does plenty of tracking himself. I don't really know for sure. But I do know that VT is extremely common... major markets, small towns. huge corporations, and smaller companies all do a ton of voicetracking. I'm not saying it's good (it isn't), just that it's the norm these days. I listen to a lot of out of market radio online and a growing trend I notice is stations that don't even bother to VT in some dayparts, they just have the computer play music, sweepers, and spots with no jock live or tracked.

One station is more local than the other....The more locality you have, the more you win...Look at a station like HOT..I give them all the credit in the world for being live 24/7....I have seen plenty of successful stations, who shares erode due to VT....KWNR for example....You can get away with it on a station like Sunny...I think Coyote will win in June and that when the fall book comes back, if CC doesn't do it before then, MORE cuts to KWNR will happen. Hopefully Coyote has the right replacement for Jenna Wilde....It could put the last nail in KWNR's coffin.
