Coyote vs. KWNR

Who's ahead? I think the personalities are a little dry over at the coyote, but I'm curious which station does better at this point? Has KWNR changed anything sice the coyote came around? When did the 10 in a row or $10,000 thing start on KWNR? I heard a sweeper today on the coyote saying we don't have to pay you to listen to our station. anyway, just curious.

They don't pay their jocks a decent salary to work their either....

Did KCYE hire a program director yet? Who are some of the people they've been talking to?

I know that Arbitron didn't show it in the first book....but it appears to me that the Coyote is stealing a large share of KWNR's audience rather quickly. When moving about the city, I hear 104.3 a lot more now than 95.5 and several country music afficionadios that I know so the new product is presenting a much better selection of music.

Lastly, I think the Coyote is doing a great job of winning the marketing battle. Everytime I turn around, a Coyote commercial is on TV...they may not be buying listeners through $10,000 giveaways, but they are doing it through extensive outside advertising.

This battle will be interesting to follow throughout the year around....KWNR has the heritage, but it appears that Beasly is prepared to battle them tooth and nail for the long haul!

In the most recent trend, KWNR was #4 25-54 and COYOTE was #10. KWNR will be dropping off a good December and KCYE will be dropping off a poor December, so it will probably be close when the book comes out.

So far COYOTE has had only one decent month (January), when that month drops off in the phase 1 Spring trend, KCYE may drop out of the top 10 25-54, unless their April can match their January.

I don't think the archives are available, but around two or three years ago I predicted on this board what would happen if a second country station came on. I said the country share in LV was great for one station, but not quite large enough for two stations to thrive. I predicted that even if a second country was able to get 40-45% of the country share, that share would barely make the top 10.

Our friend heehaw69 predicted we could see a country dogfight like KUPL-KWJJ in Portland. I respectfully disagree. Yes it might (or might not) stay close between KWNR and KCYE. But the difference is Portland (perhaps because it's one of the least ethnic large markets?) has a consistently large overall country share month after month, book after book, year after year. The country share in Las Vegas isn't as large and we could see more months like February where it gets downright ugly when the country pie is split.

Didn't KWNR just hire a guy to work with Brooks and Mitch on KWNR's Wakin'
Crew? What's his background?

Should be interesting. Is KWNR owned by Clear Channel? I think that they are giving away $10,000 on lots of their stations. Its another one of those national contests.

The $10,000 contest KWNR is running is local not national.

His name is Mark Stevens. He did middays at KWNR from 1989-1997. He most recently did mornings in Baltimore before moving back to Vegas.
