CP for 1520 AM Petal, MS

I thought the reason for letting radio stations like WVMI 570 to move to the expanded AM band 1640 was to relieve congestion on the band and that the old frequencies would no longer be available. I've noticed a lot of stations still on the original frequency or new applications such as 570 on the coast being applied for. Does'nt that defeat the purpose for moving in the first place? Or has the rule changed.

WRPM *was* granted the move to 1170, but it's not on either 1170 or 1530. I drove thru the area months ago and didn't hear either one...

I drove through Poplarville yesterday and 1530 was on with southern gospel as usual, I was off when I came back it must sign off early or have sproradic hours.

I also noticed that 890 AM in Laurel/Hattisburg was off the air again. It was off the air for a long time but I noticed that it was back up a few months ago with Party Blues and Oldies, but something must have happened to it since I last heard it. Nothing but static.

I have to seriously ask: What would anyone want to do with a small AM in Petal? I'm afraid that the Pine Belt market is approaching it's realistic maximum for stations to have a chance at profitability. The only option I could see for such a station would be yet another religious outlet. I could picture one of the larger churches in Hattiesburg, such as Temple Baptist with it's fast growth, seeking the license.

Well, I think you answered your own question...

Certainly, such a station would almost surely be relgious, which means one of two things:

1. The owner intends to sell time on the station for pre-recorded programs. There is money to be made here, and to my recollection, there isn't another station down there doing that (unless I am forgetting someone, which I may be). Or,

2. The potential owner has a Point of View to bring forward.

Here in Memphis, WCRV makes a freakin' killing, I'm told. While the situtations are doubtless different, I suspect the potential owner would be doing the same type of thing, on a smaller scale.

As an aside... I picked up WHLT-22 up here a couple of weeks back. What a walk down Amnesia Lane that was!

I think the closest station that sells time would be 1130 in Gulfport, or the 1190 in BSL.. when theyre on the air.
