CP granted for KLAK quasi-move-in

The FCC has granted KLAK 97.5 Durant, OK's application to relocate to Tom Bean, TX (northeast Collin County). Basically, it will relocate to a tower south of their current one to one in SE Grayson County. Like KHYI 95.3, it will be a C2 that basically will only have good suburban Collin County coverage.

Wonder if they will try to target the whole area with a limited signal or focus exclusively on the suburbs -- something like the old KMMK/KWPL "WPL" 95.3 McKinney?

Not a problem for KLAK -- FM translators and class D FMs have no FCC protection. They must be taken dark or find another home if they will interfere with a full power FM.

Most recently, class D FM WHHS 107.9 in Philly was almost silenced to make way for recent Philly move-in WRNB 107.9 (moving from 107.7 in southern NJ). It found another spot on 99.9 there after the two second-adjacent signals (WJBR-FM 99.5, WPHI 100.3) agreed to forgive some small interference. I'm sure WPHI-FM owner Radio One agreed since they were the ones moving-in WRNB and generating bad publicity of forcing some small high school FM station off the air.

A similar situation is occuring in Seattle where dance KMIH 104.5 Mercer Island will be silenced when KMCQ 104.5 along the WA/OR border makes the long-distance move into the Seattle/Tacoma area (to 104.5 Covington WA).

Of course, here, St Mark's School's KRSM 93.3 Dallas was silenced to make way for the current KDBN 93.3 in the '90s. It was bumped to 93.3 from its previous home on 88.5 to make way for KEOM 88.3->88.5 upgrade.

Don't forget BIG ASS RADIO at 95.3FM in Bedford back in 1995 I had my pirate station up and pumpin with thousands of dollars in Aphex processing, Sweepers, Jingles, Promos, Music.
Maybe you might have heard it: BIG ASS RADIO! ONE BIG ASS WATT at 95.3fm Maybe you didn't :)

KLAK vs. KHYI vs. KFWR?

KLAK is the "K-Lake" serving Sherman/Dennison, right? I wonder how those folks will feel about being linked to the northern Dallas suburbs instead of to the Texoma region?

Meanwhile, here's the idle speculation I've submitted to my khyi-fans -at- yahoogroups.com discussion list:

What the FCC application doesn't answer is what KLAK plans to do with their new Collin County coverage. If they keep playing the same old mainstream country, they'll have nothing to offer against the Wolf, KSCS, or even the Twister. If they go for something edgier, they'll come up against KHYI, as well as whatever the folks at Fort Worth's KFWR "The Ranch" have planned. Or they could change formats altogether -- the best case here, IMHO, would be to return a real rock station to the DFW airwaves, something we haven't had since Clear Channel killed The Eagle.

One possibility, though, is that this is just the first step in something larger. KFWR made that strange deal for KTFW, and they already have coverage to the southeast (Corsicana) and northeast (Greenville). Is KLAK the missing piece of the puzzle -- could The Ranch be preparing to make a frontal attack on its crosstown rival, The Range? Such speculation is complete conjecture at this point... but wouldn't it be great to have two stations fighting to raise the bar on OKOM? Except, of course, for the further subdivision of the 1.0 Arbitron share...

KLAK is not the country station there. I think that's KMMT or something along those lines. KLAK is more like KVIL in format. Lot's of banks, doctors, and dentist offices in Collin county need somekind of background music. That's where I hear KLAK most. ;>)

Only if they are within the 60dbu contour...if not, tough luck, KLAK!

FYI, Tom Bean is in Grayson County, not Collin County. Not that it makes any difference in terms of the coverage for KLAK once it relocates.

The relocation and coverage of Collin Co. by KLAK is one thing, but are they going to "sound" competitive? Right now they sound like a Sherman radio station. Small-time, small-talent. Even the spots are bad. Management would be foolish to even think they could reach other counties effectively, and even if they want to service just Collin County, I hope they have plans to hire some decent jocks and get the music on track. Otherwise, KVIL, as bad as they are, will continue to be the AC button on radios in Collin Co. KLAK will be no factor at all.

I don't agree - I think the music is better than KVIL. I listen less now than I used to because that stupid CSN translator makes a mess of it well into Plano.

Maybe they will bring back the "Sunny" format - which really grew on me.

Re: KLAK vs. KHYI vs. KFWR?

When did they go country? Just a few days ago they were AC. The area needs another country station as much as we need a Celtic hymn station. OVER saturated on country and Spanish.

If KLAK moves to Tom Bean and beams it's signal towards Dallas
it will be fighting with a dam low powered station that already has a Ceadar Hill stick that is on 97.5 that simulcast 91.3 KDKR here is the information according to radio-locator and FCC's database.

KLAK K-Lake is an adult contemporary station. The country K-Lakes is KLXK 93.5 Breckinridge. There may be other K-Lake's that are country.
I would wish for a format change to AAA which could be a good fit for their Tom Bean CP or Keller application footprints.

Hey I listen to KLAK for 2 reasons

1. They put a listenable signal into Carrollton when that stupid translator
station isn't blasting.

2. Its better than listening to Christmas music 24/7
On KVIL.

So there is nothing wrong with KLAK!<P ID="signature">______________

We need a another americana type format here. If Tom Bean decides to go with country he needs to put a americana format here in Dallas

Tom Bean is the city near where the tower is.

OOPS Sorry! If KLAK is planning on doing this, they need to go with americana. We need one here in Dallas
