What about NPR?

CPB isn't killed-off, but would lose a portion of their Federal funding.

This will mean more and longer pledge drives on PBS and NPR member stations.

Which will mean that its leftist politics will be
funded solely by those who agree with them.

I can live with longer pledge breaks. I turn down the TV
volume and turn on the radio. Good for the radio business!

And if you want to pledge, call during the show you like,
and tell them that's why you are calling.

Basically, yes.

What I've done for the past 2 years. . . on the Sat. night AFTER pledge week. Taking "Yes, Minister" or "Keeping Up Appearances" off to put some dollar-per-holler guru on doesn't please me.

I don't know if they are totally unfamiliar with NPR & PBS or not, but I am.
If I added up all the minutes I've listened to NPR in my whole life, I don' think it would total much more than a couple of hours.

I used to watch PBS years ago before the proliferation of cable channels but not much since.

You still have a PBS station running "Yes Minister"? Lucky you.

I get four PBS stations on my dish and none of them run it.

You said that already.

Re: CPB Bill

I watch Lawrence Welk and Globe Trecker on our PBS station. And sometimes McNeil Lehrer.
That's about it.
I cut my cable tv to limited basic. I get 10 local channels on it. No Cnn, or Fox! $14 per month!

APT just started running it from the beginning like 3 weeks ago.

Once DTV takes hold maybe you can even get rid of reception only service.

I do hope that PBS will add some of those nifty infomercials. There are just not enough of them on TV already </sarcasm>
______________

Re: CPB Bill

Yup. i could see if they had more balance...
Besides, plenty of other places for "educational" stuff on radio and TV
(TV especially, broadcast and cable channels)

Maybe they can repeal the 'non-commercial' part and be kind of like those
Canadian "public" stations which can run a few ad minutes per hour.
"We'll be back with more All Things Considered after these messages
from Ben and Jerry's, Starbucks, and Utne Reader."

I see no problem with that. Better they continue to exist in a form like TV Ontario or Canal Once with some advertising than not exist at all or give us one week of begging for every week of programming.

Good to see that posters are abiding by the forum rule of no political posts! In actuality, PBS and NPR are about America's only source for in depth (and usually balanced) information on national issues. Channels such as the Discovery channels (generally a bunch of trash) and the Nick channels (almost non-stop, exploitive commercials) in no way take the place of PBS. If the republicans get their way and weaken CPB it will be another blow to quality broadcasting here in the US.

Au revoir, Great Society. I won't miss you. Can I have my money back now?

If a poster (I don't remember who) from an earlier discussion of CPB/PBS/NPR was correct and very little of the CPB money actually makes it to the stations anyway, then what's the big deal? Just another wasteful bureaucracy called to accountability. I never liked the idea of a private corporation funded by public money anyway. Let them earn their own keep!

In the range of 4 minutes per hour if under a community radio license.
