KHAK #1 again. Congratulations again goes out to KHAK on their #1 performance in the latest book. A Great job of promoting your station goes out to the PD Bob James.

WMT-AM, Z102.9, KKRQ both up.

KDAT is up and wins the battle of the Christmas Stations over WMT-FM.

Rock 108 wins the battle over KRNA this time around for new rock.

B100 and the 92.3 not really putting a dent into Z's numbers.

KROJ out of Vinton is not even on the radar.

Happy Listening

Interesting that you mention KROJ. With all of the speculation on the new station staying Classic Country or not in order to keep CC from starting up a competitor for KHAK in Anamosa made me chuckle. Does noone remember MAX 102.9? The same genius that is behind the mega success of KZIA launched an all out effort to dethrone KHAK 9 years ago (was it that long? Wow, time flies!) and couldn't even make a dent! KHAK listeners are country to the core which translates into LOYALTY! I think the CR area would benefit greatly from more country music choices....but beware those who try! People WILL listen but will never admit it until you go down in flames. Ha! I think Cumulus would be better off keeping 107.1 Country (not that they even need it for "protection" for KHAK) because if Clear Channel thinks they can take down the giant that is 98.1....ummmm, think again. I respect KHAK greatly, but really don't think it would be hard to put together a stronger country station with better talent, imaging, etc. But it WOULD be hard....proven nearly impossible to take them down in the ratings. Leave that to CHR! :)

Country???

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I have to ask it anyway.

Being that eastern IA is fairly urban and progressive (I think), I have to wonder if all the aforementioned discussion on here of 95.7, 107.1, 98.1 and whoever else is being overly optimistic about country in eastern IA???

I mean, I'm not trying to be a urban know it all, but is CR.IA City really THAT country oriented???

I don't mean to insinuate with my above line that you can't listen to country and be progressive, I just mean it isn't common to find alot of country music fans in growing urban areas. Commonly.

I may stand corrected....

If you add up the numbers, country in the CR market comes out ahead of either CHR or AC... in the Quad Cities it comes out ahead of CHR and AC COMBINED...
it's the number one format in Sioux City... it was the number one format in Waterloo the last time I saw any numbers for that market... in doesn't do quite so well in Des Moines. It does well in most midwest markets, often the number one format.

And remember, country does really well among women 25-54. (which is ironic, since it used to be considered a male format!)

I think Cumulus would be

These days they don't have to "take them down"-- just knock off a couple of points. Today, it's all in how the stations add up in the cluster.

Probably not impossible, but pretty close. And it would take a lot of money.

KHAK's continued strong performance is more evidence of what Clear Channel will probably do with 95.7.

> KROJ out of Vinton is not even on the radar.

Zero marketing=zero share. Cumulus and Clear Channel won't make the same mistake with their new stations.

In other notes, KMJM/1360 isn't even a blip. Will this become a new home for La Preciosa or Air America? They can refer the four FOX Sports listeners to KXIC.

Also, it's interesting to see KDST listed. Someone in northern Linn Co. must've had a book, because the signal isn't there in CR, even on a good radio.

Barbi Tron.... It's interesting that you think it would be easier to find better talent than those already at KHAK. They keep winning the their airshift's against the local talent... but yet it would be easy to beat them??? You sound like a bitter Z employee. I think if you listen to KHAK, you can hear the difference between just any Country Station and KHAK. KHAK enjoy's being in Eastern Iowa and loves it's listeners rather than just talking to it's listeners.

Congratulations to Z on staying 2nd with all the CHR's coming at them but give KHAK some more credit than.... (I respect KHAK greatly, "BUT" really don't think it would be hard to put together a stronger country station with better talent, imaging, etc.)

I am sorry you feel my post was bitter. After rereading it, I can't imagine why you would say that. I believe there is too much bitterness on this board and would never try and further that attitude. I stand by my beliefs. I also think KHAK's talent is good...but comfortable. We've all been there. Doesn't make them bad talent or bad people who hate their listeners. Obviously they are number one....so I'm sure none of THEM are taking this as personally as you.

So then... why couldn't Max beat out KHAK back when they went Country???

Here's a funny story back when MAX was around. They gave out some KHAK Free Country Concert tickets to their listeners and then had a pre-party before the show across the street. Classic!!! That is what NOT to do to get people to convert!!!

The point of the post was not WHY MAX didn't beat KHAK, but the fact that they couldn't even dent the monster that is KHAK. Translation (or you could just stop pouting and reread the original post) country listeners in the CR/IC corridor are LOYAL to the bone...so good luck to either Cumulus or Clear Channel if they choose to start up another country station. It would be good for the listeners, bad for the company trying to get ratings. Period. If the stunt you mention is true, I agree that is lame but if you want to fight....you'll have to find someone else big boy.

No pouting here. What I find interesting is that you make a point to say that... "I respect KHAK greatly, but really don't think it would be hard to put together a stronger country station with better talent, imaging, etc."

Listening to them, I think they have very good talent, imaging, etc and they are hard to beat!!! I guess it's just a case of you can't please everyone, (Barbi Tron), but KHAK seems to be pleasing the Listeners.

I admittedly haven't seen the books in either market, but I heard KRNA beat Rock 108 in CR, and that Rock 108 performed poorly in Waterloo/Cedar Falls as well.

Can anyone conclusively confirm or deny?

Re: Country???

Well, this is my first post....
I get a huge kick out of people thinking that the radio "personalities" are the reason for ANY success or failure of a station. Regardless of format.
The ONLY place I see this as being true is on AM radio.
Most commercial radio just plain sucks. And I do listen. It's the so-called "music" that is played that makes me wanna puke! I'm curious how much AM has grown in the last 15 years?
The Bus in Ankeny has a format I think will take off. What exactly DO they call it?
KHAK is number one because the music they play is LESS offensive and more diversive than anything else out there. And yes, I do listen... sometimes.

I should also say that I get to travel all over the state for work and get to listen to a lot of radio. My favorites are the Captain and Tommy Lang on KCJJ. (Get well Anthony!) Also Don and Mike in the afternoons. I love their 10-minute commercial breaks; I get to surf for music on a known schedule that way!
Maybe some Rush. Dan Patrick. Dr. Dean. Paul Harvey when I can still find him, (WMT and WHO can go to hell for that one.) Ask us anything on Friday's with Dwyer and Michaels has to be the best bit in radio, even if it's not original? Mancow used to be cool. But he is way to contrived now. And damn Mark Vos, we need Glen back!
Am I rambling yet?
OK, Michael Cross has the coolest voice in radio. And I hear he's a... not liked? Xmas music in Oct? BITE ME. Does anyone have the balls to play Monte Montgomery? Greg Alan, I wish you were still on mornings! That guy on the mornings now shouldn't be broadcasting on a high school station..... And he's the PD?
By the way. Tried XM, it sucks too.

You may call me Chris.

In the 12+ numbers in CR, KRNA dropped considerably from the previous book, while KFMW was about the same, so KFMW beat KRNA. Not that either one did that well... KDAT had as many listeners as KFMW and KRNA combined. Of course, KHAK had more than all three combined.

The Waterloo numbers have been embargoed again.

It would make more sense to put Air America on KXIC, where it would probably have a base of listeners, rather than 1360 which you can't get in Iowa City.

KMJM was originally standards to hurt KMRY. When that failed, they went after KCRG. That's also failed. Maybe CC will try an all out assault on KXEL!

Ten years, actually. I joined Max full-time in March 1996, and it had already been country for six months.

Point well taken.

The country audience is a huge audience in Eastern Iowa. Having said that, however, having country on both 95.7 and 107.1 (someday, if that ever were to happen) would be oversaturation. I disagree with others that KHAK can't be messed with. It would simply take lots of marketing, money, patience, and programming that gives listeners a reason to switch from KHAK. It's not inconceivable, it certainly could be done.

It's not unreasonable, though, for one of these stations to approach the market with something that seems more "progressive." A rhythmic CHR, for example, might work if the signal on 95.7 were stronger, and could reach the Quad Cities, for example. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that is the case, so we can probably expect something that duplicates other existing signals. Country. Maybe sports.

But I essentially agree with you that Eastern Iowa isn't exactly as countrified as people sometimes seem to believe, KHAK's phenomenal success notwithstanding. That argues in favor of doing something a bit edgier than country or sports.

Re: Country???

How much longer can KZIA go with the two grandpas doing mornings?

Does anybody else chuckle when they hear these two guys playing hip hop and other urban?

Norton is the genious who came up with the K-MAX format on that frequency 10 years ago.

He is a pompous self important fool who thought he was smart enough to take on KHAK and take them down with his new country format. He failed miserably.

He will ruin KZIA in good time. Especially if he keeps his 50 something announcers on much longer.

They're not any older than plenty of others. Eddie and JoBo come to mind.

Look at the ratings. KZIA doesn't look to be in danger.
