Craig Cornett's official resignation note

Hello everyone this is Craig Cornett, I wanted a moment to speak to each of you about my life changing events over the last few weeks.

Coming to Atlanta and being part of the KICKS air staff was one of the most exciting times in my life, but as you know by now, life can hand out some very difficult times as well.

My father, who appeared on the air with me on Veteran’s Day, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Cancer has changed my life as it has changed many lives, and right now I am the only family member who can care for my father. You see my mother is ill as well, and unable to take care of dad.

Not knowing what time he has left, I have chosen to be with him here in Arkansas, and realize with this commitment to my dad, I cannot be on the air as host of The KICKS morning show in Atlanta.

I apologize for anything confusion the last few weeks has brought to you, but due to my current family situation I must resign as KICKS morning host immediately.

The future will continue to be great for KICKS, I personally regret not being able to finish what I started and wish each of you, Kristen, Jim, and Jill all the best in the future.

Thank you for all the emails of support, for now I am not able to answer all of you, but please know I will not soon forget your words of encouragement and thoughts of kindness.

Now on to the business of choosing yet another morning guy. Let's talk about who should get it, and reality.

1. Jim Vann would do a terrific job, and already has a great relationship with the other cast members. I don't think Jim should get the gig just because he's outlasted about five other morning guys. He truly is the logical choice for the gig. It would be a wonderful crown atop a career, and I cannot think of another talent that deserves this shot more.
2. Cadillac Jack might get the offer. But, if you have listened to Caddy's afternoon show, it's a one man gig. The times that I've listened to Caddy do fill-in morning shows, he hasn't played well with others. He's just not used to working with other cast members, but I'm sure he could learn quickly.
3. Bill Celler has been a yeoman on the mid-day for a long time. But what a team player. He has the personality and warmth to do a fine job on the morning show.

Now, let's look at Station management. If they were to make a choice to promote an inside guy, it would do some wonderful things at that station.
1. Send a message to the employees that they could actually get a promotion at that station. Of late, management looks to other markets for talent, which is telling the present employees that they don't measure up.
2. Save themselves a ton of money on salary for the morning show choice. You don't really think that they'd pay an inside guy $250K or higher to take this gig, do you?
3. Give management a chance to tie ratings numbers to bonuses, but at a much lower base salary for the talent.
4. Reverse the PERCEPTION that management can't make good talent choices (e.g., firing Moby, Bandy & Bailey, Cornett) with an inside choice. Guys, an inside choice CAN'T be any worse that your last five years!!! The trends, Arbitrons, and perceptions have not been kind to you, and you used to be in the top three or four of this MAJOR radio market.
5. If management throws the dice on an insider, at a lower base salary, they'd certainly have enough money in the budget to actually PROMOTE the morning show.

Hey....I could be wrong....it's happened before...

OK...Let's get one thing STRAIGHT...Despite EVERYBODY'S opinions, Kicks still has the ONLY country music station to remain in the top 10 despite all the show changes. Atlanta likes its country music and Kicks delivers it better than anybody. Now, having said that...

Jim Vann would be a good choice but I think he's better at being the guy who can come up with the funny lines just to banter with the host. Could he carry off the morning show? Probably could...and could do it well.

Cadilac Jack, he likes the afternoons so I doubt he'll take it.

You may think this is rather odd but I'd like to see Rhubarb Jones on Kicks. He's been around for a long time and I think the listeners would really take to it. However, since Kicks let Moby go for sounding too country, I doubt it would happen.

Bill Cellar would do an excellent job but he's tried before and I doubt management would put him there.

The best person for the job would be somebody who's family friendly, has a good sense of humor (leaning toward the clean side) but has just enough touch of mischeif to keep the rest of the show cast guessing what they'll say next. Nobody in my radio experience (27 years) has that unique quality. Too bad, really.

So, let's call in Neil Boortz! (Just kidding)

Since Moby fired Neil McGinnley... maybe Neal could see if he could come back and work for Kicks.... he would be "perfect"...

KICKS new host?

Didn't I hear something about Jimmy Baron looking for a new job? ;)

This might be the perfect opportunity to try John Boy and Billy again. I dont think they ever got a fair shake over on 96 Rock all those years ago.
