I needed a radio to use as a walkman, so I picked up at Big Lot for $5.99 a Coby CX-53 mini AM-FM radio with digital tuner. The FM works okay, but the AM is horrible. On the AM the frequency won't stay locked and it difts and there is poor selectivity. WTIC 1080 (50KW day/night) was splattering all the way into the 1120s and for the most part blocked out WPRX (1KW Day/500 watts night). I had to turn the radio a certain way to pick up WPRX. WPRX splattered into the lower 1200s. The 10 watt T.I.S. Station on 1670 on Route 10 splattered all the way into the 1700s. I guess the term "You Get What You Pay For" is true. Some other time I'm gonna get the Sony Walkman I want from Walmart or Target or Sears. (All 3 sell the one I want and it's $30 and I had one befoe and it works great).

Crappy Little Radio I picked up

I've got a Coby radio with an analog tuner, and I regularly get WLW, WSM, and WSB. It is the best AM tuner I have.
Cost about $15 at Big Lots if I remember right.
There is an OLD RCA radio sitting in storage - never tried to use it though. I'm told it doesn't work

Why don't you guys get the Sony ICFS10MK2 Pocket AM/FM Radio? It has great selectivity on AM and FM yet costs only $10-$13 (J&R has it for $10.99). You can get good reception of locals and distant AM stations (from central CT, I'd imagine that it would pull in NY stations and most likely WBZ too). FM is supposedly decent as well.
It's certainly much better than playing roulette with a crappy Coby radio. That's the kind of radio that is sold in those marketplaces that you see in third world countries - alongside such "new" Chinese brands as Magnetbox and Sorny.
