CRAPPY RERUNS ON WLW

Severe weather tonight, so of course, I tune into WLW... sure enough, I'm greeted with a Doc Thompson Show replay. Doc even warned his listeners to "avoid I-275, there's a big pile-up"... That's terrific. A traffic report from several days ago. My question is, what's the point in having a LIVE news person there, if the other 50 minutes is outdated, irrelevant crapola? I mean, let's be serious. Are people really going to "make an appointment" to listen to a Doc Thompson show that they missed during the week? Or listen the show again? I have serious doubts.

I find it hard to believe that Darryl Parks can't find something other than "reruns" to put on Saturday evenings. ::)

If you're going to rip the station and the person who runs it, at least get the name of the person correct. Hint: It's not Parks.

That's a really good burn, Matt - A cheap shot from Mom's basement at 12:49AM. What's the matter? Not much action at the bar at Applebee's last night?

"Parks" is indeed the name of the person who implemented the shoddy practice of "reruns" on this once great station, whether he is in charge now, kicked upstairs, or whatever, he is responsible. I was OM at a news-talker where the PD and I determined that it made little sense to "rerun" a current events talkshow, despite the strong urging of others. I think the only "reruns" that we aired were of Bruce Williams, and that was overnight, on the weekends when Jim Bohannon wasn't on.

There is no excuse for a 50,000 watt station to be airing reruns. If they can't run local programming then they need to put on some network shows to add freshness to the station.
The easy route would be to take some of the talk shows that air on WKRC and run the best of. Of course they do sound a bit dated but it is better than an outdated Doc Thompson show where he is taking about a traffic tie up.

I still like the concept of an 'Ask The Expert" Week end. Music stations for year have been running their stations on week ends the way HBO and various cable networks do of running their programming several times in a week end in different day parts. A second airing of Ron Wilson and Gary Sullivan would help.

Still, they would have to develop other Ask The Expert programs. The other route to go is to add sports programs such as the best interviews of the week from Lance's shows.

These are just a few ideas. I am sure many of you can come up with other ideas too. I know a lot of stations had a great dea of success in running blocks of Dr.Dean Edell. I loved his show but he stopped doing it a few months ago. Pity.

I agree, WLW should look to KFI as an example of what to program on weekends. Bill Handell on the law could be program worth airing as well as Leo lepotre's program both of are Premere syndicated and do not air here.

You'd be surprised how many people miss the live broadcasts of talk shows. Especially those on while people are at work. The biggest mistake radio stations make is assuming the audience is always listening, because they're not. If a station invests a lot of money in live & local talk, they need to give the audience several chances to hear it. Podcasts and streams are helpful, but you'd be surprised how many people prefer the best-ofs on the weekends. Sure, if there's a local emergency, interrupt with the latest information. But generally speaking, a repeat of a local show is worth more to the audience than a first broadcast of an out-of-town or syndicated show. Unless it's something really unique.

Is that seriously the best that you can do? You should know better. I live in my Aunt's attic, and I only go to TGI Friday's because Applebee's sucks.

Have you guys been living in a cave? Radio has changed, period! The only reason WLW doesn't put on a syndicated program is their desire to try and stay local. Hilarious really because CC has thrown down the budget axe on "The Big One" as well.

In five years, that station will be like most of the other news talk stations around the country. Stale and boring. Most of the programming decisions come from higher up these days. You don't have a program director sitting in his office anymore making big decisions.

Times have changed fella's. You can complain about it all ya want. But don't expect things to change in a positive direction.

Radio is already like this.. WLW is no exception. Why say 5 years when exactly what you say has already happened to "The Big One" ::)

Guess what's on right now, Sunday, June 26?

Doc Thompson... a special presentation, The Reds play the NY Yankees... Wow, COOL!!!

Oh, wait - That game has already been played....

More proof than ever that you can't be "relevant" while airing irrelevant reruns of old shows. ??? Even more puzzling, this big tune-out factor is a lead-in to LIVE programming. ::)

@Stereolane.....it is up to the producers that run the replays to edit out the date/times.....and it is the responsibilty of the Chief Tech Producer to do that......But that doesn't happen because the producers don't care......

Any problems contact Paul Mason (Asst PD) at WLW, Kevin Secaur (Chief Tech Producer) at WLW.

Back in the day, the producers cared because they had bosses that cared.......All the old names you use to hear, like Russ Jackson, Steve Versnick, Brian Perry, Danny Gleason, Kevin Haas, Matt Buttelworth, Dave Deweese and such aren't there anymore, they saw the light and left but when they did their shifts, they cared about what was on the air....the producers left on WLW not now.
