Crawford Will Flip an Alabama AM to All-Digital

Crawford Broadcasting is going to give all-digital HD Radio a try on an AM station in Alabama.

On Sept. 1 the Christian broadcaster will flip WYDE in Birmingham to the MA3 mode; only listeners with HD Radio receivers will be able to hear the AM signal after that, though the same content will be available on two local FMs. Two other AMs in the country currently operate in all-digital.

That's good! If more groups would step up to make the move to MA3, it might actually get a little bit of traction before it's too late.
Especially religious AM stations can encourage their aged flock to go out and purchase portable HD-capable radios from their own Amazon store. Promotes HD and fundraises at the same time.

Yeah, especially as there are now a few HD capable AM-FM radios that are reasonably priced and work well. They're also easy to operate. No more difficult than tuning any other radio.

And an AM HD station does not have the issues the analog audio has in homes with lots of man-made noise. I can't listen to a single AM inside my home, for example... even a 5 kw that is just about 8 miles away on 970!

Unfortunately, excessive noise can still kill the digital decoding of MA3, but eliminating the analog carrier allows for actual bit error correction to make up for missed or dropped packets.

Will Church followers even spend money on a new radio?, saying there old radio works

Saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

David said Digital AM does better than analog with man made noise. Does it extend the station's usable daytime range back what to the FCC coverage formulas had for a class C station that signed on in the early 1950's
