Creative Longwire

I live in a mountainous region with low ground conductivity and thinking of stringing up a longwire for inexpensive MW and SW reception. I believe that to get the strongest reception, the wire should be at a right angle to the station (Example: I stretch out the wire east to west if I want to receive a station from the north.)

But, I'm not sure about it - or even if it makes that much difference.

To get stations from all directions, should I:
1. stretch the wire in one direction?
2. Put an "L" in the wire with half running E-W and half running N-S?
3. Hook up 2 longwires (1 E-W and 1 N-S) to my radio?
4. Doesn't matter.

Also. is there any specific length a longwire needs to be, or do I string up the longest wire I can find?

Thanks for the info.
