Creatively dumb remotes

Charleston in August of 2012 will be having the PGA Championship at the Ocean Course. Today and tomorrow, they are having something called the PGA Championship Experience at Marion Square, where you can buy tickets and see what's going to happen at the championship.

This relates to radio in that both of our local sports talk shows (Bobby Hartin and Ted Byrne on WTMZ, and Jonas and Big Ben on WSPO) were at Marion Square doing live remotes, literally a long 3-point shot away from each other's microphones.

One of the stations was doing a putting contest for free tickets. It was kind of strange to see both of them so close to each other.

Non sarcastically, that is really good work by the PR folks for the event. It is usually very difficult to get multiple non-same-cluster stations to make an appearance for the same event at the same time. At least in Columbia, Clear Channel, Inner City and Citadel all usually demand exclusives. That may be great for the broadcaster, but it is never good for the event or organizer. Whoever the PR person deserves high praise for their cat herding skills!

I've done quite a few remotes with someone from "across the street" on-site at the same time. Considering the current climate, I don't have a problem with it. If your on-air product is THAT shaky where you are worried about competition being there, it speaks volumes, IMO. I've always had fun with it. Good-natured ribbing off-mic, t-shirt swaps, etc. We're there to do a job & why not have fun? Even if we're going after the same P1s......
