Critique this Classic Rock Playlist

These are a couple of sample hours from KRBR Duluth, Minnesota which has recently changed from Rock to a classic rock-based format. What does anyone think about this as a template for a station trying to go up against an established classic rock / classic hits station in any market?

Call me old but I just can't get myself to call nicleback and Alice in chains "classic"..... Doors,Beatles,Kiss,Floyd,Zep,.... even 80s hair bands yeah. But anything post-grunge.... thats just plain bad music. Slightly better than hip-hop, but not by much.
Want to hear a classic rock station the way it should be done?? Go to WDRV.COM

Looks to me like a fairly safe, solid playlist.

Radio guys may hate Nickelback, but the fact is they're selling millions of CDs and packing arenas. If you're playing currents, you're playing Nickelback.

Judging by these sample hours KRBR has switched to a Rock format very similar to the one at my station...and we consistently kick the living sh*t out of the crosstown Classic Rock-only station.

Whereas I must be in the minority....

I like Nickelback, but their stuff can get obnoxious due to the pretty much use of he same beats... Great good if they could get out of the rut.

personally... I'd rather see a station like that do more newer music per hour, other than Jet (which in IMO is just a wannabe ac/dc).

Younger listeners are listening to classic rock but also, it's the same 400 songs warmed over... I beleive in a classic rock "heritage" station could do better than a garden variety classic rock only if done right but....

Radio has become a place where a consultant comes in and nixes the idea calling it "not what your P1s are looking for"

I'd love to go up against a station like this. A focused classic rocker would whoop them good (in CR demos, probably not in an under-30 audience). They seem to be playing WAY too many mid-charting B- or C-rotation titles, and an awful lot of new-ish (for a classic rocker) stuff. Are you sure they're positioning themselves as a classic rock station? What's the competitive situation like in this market? Are they the only game in town if you want a rock station? Long heritage?

And 99% of the time they're right. I can't think of many instances where the conservatively-programmed station didn't win by a large margin. Get most listeners very far from their "comfort zone" and they'll be gone.

This is something I learned the hard way a long time ago.

My argument is some of the new rock, if you use the pop version of the song, can usually be given to a mainstream or classic rock loving group and I don't think they would see too many problems with say three doors down f/ Bob seger.... I mean the mainstream rock stations have been playing the ac/dc knockoffs Jet for the last few years with not too many complaints (must not cause I find it in rotation in a few places)

There are two problems with Nickelback

1. Their songs sound too similar to each other.

2.They sound too much like the other bands in their genre.

Yet I wouldn't punch out if I heard Nickelback on a current based format such as Hot AC. I actually kind of like "Photograph" for some reason, it's a guilty pleasure. BUT if I heard Nickelback on a station that calls themselves "Classic Rock" I would not only punch out, I would take the station off my pre-set and never come back.

For my personal tastes, I prefer a classic rock that is well focused and concentrates on late 60s-early 80s. I don't want to hear any late 80s hairbands on a classic rock (or anywhere else). I liked early 90s grunge better than the hairbands, but I still don't want to hear grunge on classic rock stations.

I suppose my ideal classic rock station might attract too old of an audience (or would in another 5-10 years), but I still think it would do better than a classic rocker that mixes old and new music, when you try to be all things to all people you end up meaning nothing to nobody. The only way this type of wide era classic rocker could succeed is a small and/or "underradioed" market, I don't know much about the Duluth radio landscape. If Duluth has both an active rocker and a "real" classic rock, this station will probably fail.

really check wrno new orleans..conservative playlist..LOW ratings..and a new format coming in a few weeks..newstalk 995 wrno. your conservative stationsm are the reason i went to xm. i hate the fm repetition. and i am not alone. true. you are right many people do like it. but many more dont. remember the days of pulling in 10 shares. now you are lucky if you have a 3.7 share.
