Crossed field antenna - the answer to am's problems

I have heard that CROSSED FIELD ANTENNAS could save AM. By using a CROSSED FIELD ANTENNA an owner would be able to do away with his underground system, he would go omni-direction if he is directional, and he could sell off his land as it requires very little land to house such an antenna.

I don't know how it would work with IBOC but if they can be partnered together, it could be a major win for everyone.

Has anyone heard of this revolutionary technology that is being used overseas? If you are aware of it, do you recognize it as being viable in the US?

I am anxious to see what some of our more skilled and experiences technical minds have to share with us on this topic. A quick scan of what is available via Google and "The Internets" [ intended humor] is not very supportive of this concept.

I worked for a few years for a manufacturer of antennas for the cell-phone industry. (I understand that working with the spectrum with the wave-length of a pine needle is a bit of a different task. In fact, we helped some carriers to understand that using certain bands in the land of Southern pine forests was not a good choice.)

The head of our research and development group was a young genius at his task... once you got past the fact that his personal appearance and grooming made you want to ask if he was the son of Willie Nelson. Our shop did develop some break-through antennas for the cell-phone industry, but I remember that 'the young genius' was quite fond of saying: "You can't violate the laws of physics!"

After reading what I could find, it looks like for 25 years now the people who understand the "laws of physics" have tip-toed around around the Cross Field Antanna... and they just keep on walking.

Reminds me of all the talk 40 years ago about the 100 m.p.g. carburetors supposedly locked up in the vaults of the auto manufacturers.

But... once in awhile we do need a dreamer who can show us the way.
