CRTC approves XM/Sirius and CHUM

Ok, so Canadians can finally get Satellite Radio. Sirius, XM and CHUM's pay radio undertakings have all been approved.

BUT, Canadian listeners can't have everything. There will be (a minimum) of 8 Canadian channels on the services, and they must play 85% CanCon!!!! Three of those channels will be french.

Also, the satellite companies are only allowed to give subscribers nine non-Canadian channels for every Canadian channel they get. Basically, if you get the 8 Canadian channels, you will only be allowed to subscribe to 72 non-Canadian channels.

If you are still confused, you can check out the CRTC release.

Also, thanks to Bill Wilson on the SOWNY board for the heads up.

do you think we are going to get howard stern in Canada?

Word is that we aren't because the CRTC is requiring the Satellite companies have to comply with the CAB/CBSC decency policies. Same rules that apply for terrestrial stations. So, I doubt we will get O&A, Stern or any uncensored channels from these services.

Chances are that it might not happen if the CRTC objects to it.

well...this is satilitte radio...the gov't should have min effect.

if the gov't is going to regulate the sat..radio industry, then it is not worth subcribing....as it is going to be same as regular radio...

Any word on adding any Canadian stations to the US version in exchange? I thought I'd heard something about that before... that the CBC and/or some other Canadian channels would be put on the U.S. service.

Right now the only way I can get Canadian stuff is on the internet... which works great but only with a teather to the broadband pipeline.

During the application process, both XM and Sirius touted the benifits of the Canadian stations' exposure to Anerican audiences, so I'm sure they'll be available to everybody.
