cruel summer - August Top 10

Good thing no one takes August seriously, as there are some pretty ugly numbers for a few:

1 MIX
2 KEZ/KUPD
3 KHOT
4 KFWhyEye/KOOL
5 KSLX
6 KZON
7 KT'R
8 KZZP
9 KPKX
10 KNIX

Ugly: KMLE 3.0, KYOT & KNAI tied 2.4, KDKB 2.3, Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty 1.3

- The X finally showing signs of life, trending upward after the bizarre downward drift during the school break (maybe all the ASU listeners left the state for the summer?), only being beaten by one public station (KJZZ) rather than the both of 'em (as in May), and tied with Movin', though less due to their own solid work and more to KMVA's sudden collapse. (Kill the currents [or, at least, stop burning through 'em like you think you're a CHR station] and maybe you'll see a 2.0 before the apocalypse.)

- Speaking of collapses, howzabout what those DBacks are doin' for the Parking Lot! Someone needs to tell TMISLC that AM really is dead, at least in the Valley, when a grand total of one Ancient Modulator scores in the top twenty-four. And that one station relies more and more heavily on listeners who can remember when there weren't no newfangled "FM" crap on th' wireless radio thingamabob*** all the time.

- Then again, maybe AM ain't quite so dead; what's with the sudden audience growth at KOY? That audience isn't supposed to be getting bigger, right?

- OK, who's the one metered guy leaving his PPM pager next to a radio tuned to KFNX all day long, month after month? The needle never moves here; you'd think if there were any active listening going on, it would bump all the way up to 0.2 at least once. (By this theory, I'm also figuring on at least five guys doing the same for KGME. No ups, no downs, just the same five guys, 24/7/365.)

*** I can't believe Firefox spellcheck approved "thingamabob". But not "howzabout". Or "spellcheck", for that matter. Hmpf.

Paging The Old Gringo: can out-of-state college students be included in the PPM sample?

Not likely, since daily compliance is required. Meters are placed based on geographic distribution within the market, so changes in residence would be a change in the sample. I've never asked this question, nor seen it mentioned so I will check.

Here is what the methodology description says:

For Metros where the estimated college
and/or military group quarters population
is a minimum of two percent of Persons
12+ or 50,000 Persons 12+ (according to
the most recent information available),
additional telephone hundred blocks may
be added to the frame. Hundred blocks
eligible to be added are those that are
known to serve residential housing for
the college and/or military population.

That is, I forgot to mention, the diary standard. I could find nothing about the PPM, but a fundamental distinction between diary and PPM is that a diarykeeper only has to participate for one week. A PPM panelist is "on" for up to two years, and there must be something I did not find about maintaining place of residence for the sample to be geographically sound.

I love Pratt's comments on his FB page about August ratings.

Here are a few direct quotes:

"Radio ratings just released. My former station, KMLE, is now tied for 15th place. No additional comment necessary....."

"As for KUPD, since they are still using all of my material like the term "Big Red Radio", "Red Cards", the logo I personally designed in my studio apartmentnearly 30 years ago.....I actually feel like part of me is still there. LOL!"

Recap (reading between the lines): KMLE is now 15th because Pratt is gone. KUPD is 3rd because his ideas are still being used.

Have the August EGO ratings come out yet??? ;D

If B'ville eventually buys CBS Phoenix, might 107.9 be flipped to sports? :)

Re: dave p

can you name a more sad case of "look at me...i'm still relevant" in phoenix radio history than the sad, sad pratt story??

he thinks the phrase "red radio" drives ratings????

dave failed to mention that he was in 15TH PLACE IN HIS FINAL BOOK (fa 08)...LOOK IT UP. yes- he was on to the very last day of the book.

he's the ball player who can't give up at age 50. "when i played..." or the has been boxer "if i could just get in the ring 1 more time..."

he's the riddick bowe of phx radio!

TMISU are the only ones who could make sports happen on FM right now 'cause they've got a lock on just about every professional sport in the Valley. There's no future for XTRA 9~Ten and Clear Channel aint gonna blow up one of their FMs for sports (one needs to be blown up for KFWhyEye). SeeBS knows they got some great facilities in PHX and they're not gonna part with them cheaply.

You've got to admit if your specific ideas are still being used in radio today after many years, that must mean you did something right... and on top of that, for the station to still be charting at least well without having to change any of that imaging, that's a pretty nice accomplishment.
