CSB (Connecticut School of Broadcasting)

I nearly went to CSB in the early 1990's but instead I opted for Morse School of Business.

Looks like you came up on the long end of the stick! :D

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but how do you charge students $12,000 for 12 or 14 or 16 weeks of class, pay your "instructors" (some of whom I suspect probably don't know radio from food) "not-a-lot" and go bankrupt.

You gotta work real hard to do that.

Tricky Dicky Boy sucked every penny out of that school (probably to buy of a few yachts that he owns) and then kicked it to the curb. He knew it wasn't going to make it a few years from when he sold it. They don't call him Tricky Dicky for nothing.

Boo hoo hoo for Slicky Tricky Dicky Robinson. His CT schools have been deep sixed. A ten week course was close to $10,000. CSB considered job placement getting coffee and bagels from some morning show at minimum wage. Or better yet playing the role of cigar store Indian at the copier all day for some lazy ass PD at $8.00/hour. There are many great communications programs at several Universities in CT, such as Quinnipiac, Southern, UNH. Why would anyone spend that kind of money on broadcasting school? That is the definition of insanity.

Dick Robinson didn't kill the school. The corporation that he sold it to wiped it out.
Yes. You are correct. The corporation DR sold it to was an affiliate of Credit Suisse.

It was reported on one of the wire services about the shutdown of CSB that Robinson wants to re-open a new broadcasting school in Farmington under a different name. However, he, himself, can't participate because of a 5-year non-compete clause he agreed to as part of the sale of CSB in 2006. Couple of things from the "I don't get it" department:

1. With all the money he has, can't he just buyout the non-compete? To him, that's a burger and fries.

2. If the parent company of CSB shut down the school with plans to cease operations (if I'm hearing this correctly), doesn't this essentially make the non-compete null and void? What difference does it make at that point if he decides to get back into it? His family still owns the school building in Farmington.

I just hope, in the end, it all turns out for the best.

Full Disclosure: I'm a CSB Alum. When I went, it cost me $1K. And I've had a nearly 20-year run in this industry. Draw your own conclusions.

His mansion must be on Pinnacle Rd.

Remember when he used to broadcast from his yacht off the CT shoreline on weekends when Buckleys' WDRC-AM, WWCO, WSNG & WMMW used to quadcast the Adult Standards format before they went all talk?

He sounded like he was under the influence.

CSB closing is a blessing as far as I can tell. I'm yet to encounter a CSB grad who has any sort of clue about anything. They lure these people in with the promise of fame and success and then send them out to the industry without a clue. Good riddance CSB!

If you want to get into broadcasting, shell out the $$$$ and at least get an Associates from one of the zillion schools with broadcasting programs. If not, get a solid internship at a radio or TV outlet and learn whatever they'll show you. You'll be just fine.

A person should enroll in quality eduacational institutions like Quinnipiac University. They have an excellent mass communications curriculum. Ed McMahon sent his daughter to QU back in the 80's or 90's and donated money toward The Ed McMahon Media Center. Even S.C.S.U. has a good program.
Why would anyone spend money on program that teaches numb heads how to turn on a pc and throw switches. That's how Tricky Dicky got so wealthy. Morons buying into his line of bs. "Learn by Doing" One of the all time classic bs lines. Job placement is a joke. Minimum wage as a board op running Rock cats games on low power AM.
DR made a mad dash with the cash. He may be a drunk but he's no dummy. ;D

I am clueless as to who is to blame for the collapse of CSB. What I can tell you is that in the 60's and 70's there were a lot of "trade" schools that taught young adults the basics of going into radio. Remember, before this all became mush radio used to be about TALENT and there were lots of schools that taught you how to write copy, read it and familiarize the average individual with radio basics.

TALENT either made you a star or you went back to working at the bank or 7-11.

NOW talent is an accessory. Can you push the right button at the right time and say the right 6 words? Terrific...you are a board op.

Face it, CT radio and radio in general is all about the money. There are no local, small watt am or fm stations for someone coming out of a broadcasting curriculum to work at. They are all either satellite or ethnic programming. Most are owned by corporations many miles away from this state. I am not saying we should go back in time. But there has to be a better answer than firing the afternoon jock (for money reasons of course) and piping in Billy Bush. ::)

Despite us being their competition (at least when it comes to radio) I was really glad to hear that students could actually finish what they started. For those of you skeptical about what CSB brings to the table in terms of training I invite you to check out beonairtoday.com. I think you'll see that we're the only radio broadcasting school whose training actually takes place at a radio station. My point is If you know anyone who is interested in radio

1. Ask them if they are on anything
2. If they say no and still somehow want to pursue this extremely tough yet rewarding business I'd appreciate it if you let them know about The Eastern Connecticut Radio Academy

btw for those of you who listen to WILI Fm I'm on tomorrow from 6a to 10a so while you're facebooking/twittering/radio infoing check out the show at hitmusici983.com!

That is just bullshit. The school takes $12,000.00 from these students, to train them for a field where the jobs are minimal, and one week before finals they lock the doors and put a note up saying sorry we're closed until further notice. Evidently they called all the instructors in and fired them too, telling them to grab their things and leave the building. I always told anyone that asked about CSB to avoid this scam at all costs. Hopefully they listened and saved themselves some money.
You hit the nail squarely on the head. I know several people that shelled out 10k and basically learned how to turn up a mic switch and operate a cd player. There idea of job placement is part-time board operator for AA baseball games at $7.00 an hour. Or better yet a non-paying internship at a so-called big FM, standing like a cigar store Indian at a copier
all day. Copying of the latest hit list for some nimrod PD. Students should go to that school wearing hip boots. The whole school and schools like it are one big scam. They promise everything and deliver NOTHING! ::)

No, if you can do that, you're doing "Drive-Time" in a top 20 market.
