CT Television History on CPTV

CPTV will show, "You're on the Air! Early Years of Connecticut TV", tonight (12/20) at 11:00 p.m. and Thursday (12/25) at 10:00 p.m. The show originally aired in 1997.

If anyone could possibly get me a copy of this show (DVD preferably), please drop me a line if possble at my e-mail address ([email protected]). I live well outside of the CPTV's footprint, but I've heard many good comments about this particular program including about some rare footage of WICC-TV (Channel 43). Many thanks and Happy Holidays!

Just a heads-up for anyone wanting to catch it on Thursday, it started 10 minutes early last night and ran until midnight, so you might want to tune in early.

Ok, it didn't start early, but it is going to end late (it's after 11 and still on), but what I just noticed that I found funny is they were showing footage from WTIC 61's start up and other 61 clips and the flying helicopter shot at night appears to be 91 in it's typical form, nearly a parking lot on the inbound to Hartford, I guess if you're going to get aerial footage of Hartford, you're bound to catch a traffic jam.

Some of those same clips of WTIC-TV are on youtube, if you know where to look. I just wish I had a VCR back in 1984. Otherwise, I would have recorded that opening myself! To this day, I still remember the billboard along I-84 in Waterbury, from the day before (a Sunday), reminding commuters that they were coming on that week. The old "61" logo with the rainbow stripe seems so cool now, don't it? :)

As for old school Channel 61 WTIC-TV.... I went to high school at a low-budget state run school in New Britain (EC Goodwin Technical High school) and for 11th Grade US History for part of the year Mr. Rossi showed us "Centennial" which he taped off of old school Channel 61. (They ran the series in its entirety several years after its original run on NBC). I remembered thinking that the old school pre-FOX logo of Channel 61 was cool.

As mentioned on the CPTV special I remember when Channel 20 used to show the "R" Rated movies. My dad used to have a whole collection of movies he taped off of Channel 20. We got rid of them in 2003 when we downsized and sold our house in Bristol and moved to Southington.
