CTV National News - Why 11pm?

In the U.S., all three major networks do their national news in the early evening... Mostly at 6:30 in the East and 5:30 in the rest of the country. So how did CTV begin doing its national news at 11pm? And why does it hold on to this schedule?

This causes a time problem... if prime time lasts till 11pm, and CTV News runs till 11:25pm, it pushes local late news to a point past many viewers' bedtimes. And it was even worse in the Maritimes where CTV News didn't air till midnight and ATV was forced to do its late local news at 12:25am. What sort of ratings did those newscasts get?

Also for many years SRC and TVA both did their late newscasts at 10:30pm. TVA was back to entertainment programming by 11 but SRC gave time to local stations and also did sports and weather after 11pm, so it got back to entertainment programming around 11:15 or 11:20. I always thought that was the best plan of all allowing viewers to get their late news at a time when they're still likely to be awake. The only problem with this plan is that most TV viewers who speak English in North America expect a big hour-long drama to start at 10pm. (Hence Jay Leno's problems.) So that trend never caught on apart from the French networks.

I think CTV had its network newscast at 11PM local time ever since the network began in 1961, though during 1962-1963, it was seen at 10:30PM, in order to make room for its late-night show, "Network". CTV's Maritime stations had carried the news program at 12 Midnight until the late-1990s, when CTV began a seprate 11PM feed for ATV. Today, CTV's national newscast is seen at 11PM in all time zones (other than Newfoundland, of course).

As for CBC's "The National", while it was a 10PM program when it started, from sometime in the 1960s until 1982, it was seen at 11PM, opposite CTV's newscast, It moved back to 10PM in 1982 when it started its long-time "National" / "Journal" match-up.

As for how successful they are, both CTV and CBC claim that they're the most-watched news programs in Canada.

CTV? Most watched? I'm excluding Ottawa from that.
They cheated by buying A channel and shutting down their newsroom.
"A" (or as some say, eh!, lol) Should have been sold to Rogers so there could be fair competition going on there.

Anyway, the current reason is true.
They seem to be happy with ratings for 11pm coverage of coast to coast Canadian news and information, so why change that?

Besides, in current terms, the 11:30 local news repeats itself at 5:30 or 6am the next morning anyway, so those who go to bed early can get up early and watch what they missed!

...OR if desired, can record it and watch it when they get up...something like that!

Should they move their national news to 630p ET/530p CT/MT/PT and compete against Global The National?

Also, does any canadian station in ET/PT have a primetime newscast? I know Global in SK and MB has it.

I don't think there's any need for CTV to move its national newscast away from 11 PM. It's always been there, and it gets high ratings. I'd rather see local stations not airing news in the 5-6 PM slot, aside from Global National. I think some stations should consider airing news at 7 PM, as is done in some U.S. markets.

I am not aware of any Canadian stations in ET/PT having a primetime newscast. CITY had one for many years but it moved to 11 PM in 1995.

After being spared from shutdown last year, CHEK in Victoria moved its late news from 11pm to 10pm.

Then there's always the OMNI stations:
- CFMT Toronto has Italian news from 8-9pm, and Portuguese news from 9.30-10pm;
- CJMT Toronto has South Asian news (in English) from 8-9pm, and Cantonese news from 9-10pm;
- CHNM Vancouver has Mandarin news from 8-9pm, Cantonese news from 9-10pm, and Punjabi news from 10-11pm.

But yes, English primetime local newscasts are a rare breed here. CTV/Global/Citytv/A/E! (when it was still around) would rather simsub American shows.

As for 7pm news, didn't CKXT try "Toronto Tonight" at 7pm before cancelling it?

I do believe Toronto 1 did give a news and information package of some sort a run at 7pm at one point.
CP24 used to repeat the 6pm CityNews Toronto newscast, but the new owner (CTV) decided not to repeat their CTV Toronto newscast. Instead, they DO have live news coverage of some sort airing at 7pm.

SOON also, there will be a brand new CityNews 24/7 channel in Toronto that will either restore the idea of repeating the 6pm CityNews broadcast, or instead go with live and local news at 7pm.
(God only knows what's taking Rogers so long to launch the channel...)

Maybe they're negotiating with CTV to regain the CP24 name, while CTV uses something else.

If that's the case, why not negotiate with CTV to buy and own CP24 like they perhaps should have done in the first place. That way, they could run CP24 the way they are licenced to be run while a Citynews 24/7 channel can also exsist without being any kind of "threat" to CP24. (as CTV likes to put it)

In fact, CP24 simulcasts CTV Toronto's newscast at 6:

Never mind. I got my answer: NEVER.

Rogers decided to go ahead and do brutal cuts to news, which included cancelling plans to launch the CityNews channel, unfortunantly.
