Don't you mean CJOH? The BBM calls them CJOH, the public calls them CJOH, and internally at CTV they are CJOH...um.....

Anyways, anybody know how CBOT and CHRO are doing? One year ago I know CBOT was ahead of CHRO.

Hasn't CJOH been the dominant station for local news in Ottawa for a long time? Amazing to see the growth they're getting. I don't know of too many stations that dominant that can still get that kind of increase in share.

I believe CJOH has been in first place pretty much since Max Keeping has been there, which is since 1972.

Most CTV affiliates remain in first place in their market (notable exceptions include CIVT, CKCO, and CKCW in PEI only), but they have been losing market share over the years due to fragmentation and the growth of the Global empire as a competitor.
______________

Nope. (*SOB*) CJOH is now CTV Ottawa. No trace of CJOH, and the next BBM will most likely read "CTVOTT"

The Starchoice digital tv guide even replaced CJOH with "CTVOTT"

Max Keeping can be quoted as saying "Thank-you for watching CTV Ottawa, goodnite" and the desk, logos and everything...CTV...no trace of CJOH *SOB*
______________

...but they still are CJOH. Just ask the CRTC and Industry Canada. As I once said to someone, all television stations in Canada have call letters, whether they'd like to admit it or not.
______________

It's not a matter of them admitting that these television stations have call signs, it's about them taking the option of not using them because THEY DON'T HAVE TO. No one's mandating them to use it, and at the end of the day/at the bottom line/at the mind of a regular person, what's the point of a call sign...?

Get over it.

I thought CHRO-5/43's local morning show "A-Channel Morning" had begun to make major inroads against CTV's network "Canada A.M." program, although CJOH remains the dominant local news station in Ottawa.

From all the people I've talked to, whether in the industry, geeks like us, or average shmos, only the people in the industry have this thing against call signs. Then again, certain people in the industry have confidentally implied to me that they are not happy with what has been going on in recent years either. I can't name names, but one of them is very high profile.

Why are CHEX and CKWS still using call letters? Why are the stations owned by Rogers, Standard, and Jim Pattison still using them? The rule is that they must be stated once a day. Why do Global and CTV get to ignore the rules? Even CBC obeys the rules. Virtually everyone I know still refers to Toronto's CTV station as CFTO, and these are not TV geeks from the Internet. Why confuse the viewers?

Then again, I know people in the industry are required to agree with their CEOs or risk discipline.
______________

Yeah! Get over the fact that when CTV news (the first one that normally airs at 11pm) runs late, it looks too much like CTV Ottawa news is on time when it's NOT! (That is what you meant, right?)
______________

Re-Branding That Discards Legendary Call Letters

Here in the 'States, many TV stations now use their network for their branding, and not their call letters.

Here in Boston, the only on-air identification for CBS-owned station WBZ-4 that mentions the call letters is in tiny print on the bottom of the screen ("WBZ-TV/DT Boston") during promos at the top of the hour that scream "CBS-4!".

WBZ is one of the greatest "brand names" in local broadacsting throughout North America; it's a real shame that CBS believes the station should only be branded with the network. What would be wrong with "WBZ/CBS-4", or for that matter, "CJOH/CTV Ottawa"??

I would think that CJOH is as legendary a "brand name" in Ottawa as "WBZ" is in Boston.

At least WBZ still has a "4" in its logo. What I find stupid is that CBS still brands their radio station in Boston as WBZ, but not the television station. There's a lot of potential for cross-promotion, which is something Clear Channel uses with WHAM in Rochester and WSYR in Syracuse.

Any set of call letters that have been used on-air for over 30 years can be considered as a legendary "brand name". From what I have gathered so far since almost a year ago, everyone except CTV continues to call CFTO by its call letters. I remember a couple months back there was an article about some crime in the Toronto area, and every news agency across the country (even Global and CBC) referred to a report by "CFTO News". Also strange is that stations hide their call letters, but they have no problem talking about others. The CFCF/CTV Montreal website refers only to "CTV", but then they mention CBMT and CKMI (both callsigns not generally used on-air), and even CJOH.
______________
