Cubbies Bumped To WIND During Blackhawks Stanley Cup Run

The radio play-by-play of the Stanley Cup Finals, in which the Blackhawks will face the Philadelphia Flyers, will be heard entirely on WGN Radio (720 AM). Cubs games that conflict with these games will be heard on WIND (560 AM). Days on which the Cubs have games scheduled at times that the Blackhawks will also be in action are June 2, June 4 and, if necessary, June 9.

Since the Cubs are going back to WIND after a 53-year absence, does this mean we get Bert Wilson instead of Pat & Ron? Howard Miller doing the pre- and post game? The musical scoreboard show?

Maybe my memory's fading, but I don't recall WGN farming out games to another radio station before. IIRC, when they had the Cubs and Bears, the Cubs would be tape-delayed and the Bears would be live.

Last Sunday, while WGN carried the Cubs on 720 and the Black Hawks were farmed out to WIND, the Black Hawks were carried live on WGN online and via the WGN Android app. Of course, the Cubs were on MLB.com.

It's called the shadow station that picks up the live broadcast when there's a conflict on the flagship station. When 'GN most recently had the Bears, the Cubbies would usually wind up on WLS for the live broadcast. WGN would later play a tape delay. WXRT also carried a couple of Cubs games, and there may have been another station or two involved at some point or another.

I do think, however, that this is WIND's first time with live Cubs broadcasts since the Cubs moved from there to 'GN in 1958.

Maybe I was thinking of the pre-1977 "Right Kup? Dat's right, Jack!" era. I don't think they had a shadow station then. I remember tape-delayed Cub games on Sunday afternoons in those days, but nothing live on any other station.

I do think, however, that this is WIND's first time with live Cubs broadcasts since the Cubs moved from there to 'GN in 1958.

Maybe I'm wrong again, but I think this is the first time WIND has carried sports of any kind (at least in English) since they had the Bulls in the '70s.

Remember folks WIND is taking the games as WGN is busy with the Blackhawks, once the Stanley Cup games are over the Cubs head back to WGN

AFIK...WIND hasn't signed any long term deal to air the Cubs....so relax.

I was going to mention Quinlan....who I thought was superb...but I associate him with the 'GN era.

And yes, I'm aware the Cubs on WIND is just for 2 or 3 games. "It was a joke, son....a joke".

But a part of me finds it very cool that "for a few moments", the Cubs will be back where I first heard them in the days when I was in grade school.

I remember in the mid 70's (1976?) hearing a couple Bears games on Super CFL. I think this was from the time when WGN had the rights for both the Bears and Cubs.

They had the Hawks from '81 to '85 too, and have carried Illini football and men's hoops for three or four years now.

According to a Chuck Swirsky bio, Sting radio play-by-play also aired on WGN-AM, as well. Though it's possible some games might have been bumped to WIND for Cubs games. ;D

By the way, for those wondering, the radio affiliate of the Chicago Enforcers of Vince McMahon's now-defunct XFL league was ESPN 1000.
