Cummulus should try a new format

There is definately a format void that any company can fill if they would only do a little research. 80's and 90's old school hip hop & R&b is a format that could definately make noise. Think about it. HipHop was born in 1979, therefore most of the kids who grew up with it are now in their late 30's and early 40's, a prime demo for advertisers. Also, many young adults who are turned off by the violence, vulgarity and degradence to women; would welcome clean rap music back on the radio that they have not heard since high school or early college. Rap in the 80's and early 90's was about partying and having fun with a little politics thrown in for spice.

If Cummulus was smart, they would jump on this format. Nothing else they have tried has worked, so why not try something that hasn't been done.

I would be the first to put in an application for an on-air spot..

Any opinions.......
 
While I dig your idea, this market is over "urban-ed" already. This sounds like a good idea for a specialty show on 106.9.

I think Old skool rap hiphop r&b 80s to early 90s would work here if is was done right & had a few decent djs would have to have a station like that here
 
Soundscapes. Starting with the gentle sounds of a door closing on an empty office leading to the sealing of moving boxes.
Then...more construction sounds!
Followed by another format.
 
I'm not sure if the time is quite right for classic hip-hop as a viable format yet. In 3-5 years, it'll be the hot new trend, and everyone will be jumping on it like they are with Jack and Movin', though. Cumulus might as well take the plunge first, except that they never take the plunge first anywhere.
 
Didn't COX try this in Atlanta? Didn't it fail? I would love this format but we both know Cumulus will drop the ball and will have no clue how to program it. Another thing is... can a market without a real hip hop outlet until 1991 support a classic hip hop station? Majic 102 leaned more R&B before 102 Jamz, if I remember correctly. In the late '80s, "98.5 Kiss" from Port Arthur was Houston's only real hip hop station. Or maybe my memory is off?
 
Hmmm. Interesting thoughts...

But, I still believe Classic HipHop could work if done right. The imaging needs to be retro yet appealing and the promotions would have to be heavy at first; as the station's awareness grows it will catch on.

The playlist would have to dig deep to those 12inch only cuts that were one hit wonders like Word of Mouth feat. DJ Cheese " King Kut" as well as hiphop leaning dance cuts such as Shannon's "Let's the music play" to classic pop rap hits such as Blondie's "Rapture".

Sirus already has an old school channel but it still lacks depth. I believe the audience is ready. Someone should make the jump, it could definately pay off.
 
I agree, there is a lot of potential in the format. Maybe they can bring back some of the old KBXX, KHYS, KYOK and KMJQ jocks, too. Speaking of which (and I don't mean to stray off topic), whatever happened to D Solo, Golden Boy, Greg Street, Johnny O, Luscious Ice, Al B. Love!, DJ Babyface, Smokin' & The Bandit?

The fact that Radio One's KMJQ and KBXX can stll pull such big shares means that Houston is not over urbaned. If Urban was oversaturated there would be more fragmentation.

Yes Cox did fail with a similar concept in Atlanta,, although their version of the format was more Urban Hot AC than classic hip hop. Plus it was a low budget operation, it was mostly voicetracked.

Houston was one of the first markets in the country to play hip hop on the radio. In the mid-1980s KMJQ played a lot of rap product that most urbans across the country were afraid to touch. Also even if KBXX was classified as a CHR/Rhythmic or even "CHR/Dance" through the 1990s, they played a lot of hip hop. So I would say that Houston was exposed to more classic hip hop (when it was current) on the radio than 90% of the U.S.

Dj Babyface-Just left Hot 105.5 in Decatur, Il. for a station in Florida.
Smokin' & The Bandit-Was the morning team on 96.3 WHUR in Washington, DC until Steve Harvey took over recently.

D-Solo currently does a video show on saturday nights on KTXH Ch. 20 in Houston called "Street Flava".

Al B. Love currently does his own internet radio show and has a voice over company.
