Cumulus' 1410 WHBT dumps local talk show for..

....the Colin Cowherd Show.

Local talk show host Marshall Baldwin's "Florida Radioactive" 10 am to noon
weekday conservatalk show has been taken off the air ro make way for "The Herd."

1410 will now become 24-hour sports, using the moniker 1410 The Fan. Baldwin's show was previously the only non-sports related show there anyway.

Was this a brokered show?

There never was that much local content in Tallahassee talk radio.

The only station that really tried was WTNT-AM 1270 in the early 80's, which had a local show in the mornings, hosted I think by the late Lee Bowen.

WTAL during its "reign" as a talk station had (I think) one local sports show. The rest was Sun Radio Network except for Rush Limbaugh.

Tallahassee AM signals simply stink. They don't penetrate buildings and fade out just outside the perimeter.

I'm surprised someone hasn't tried this, as it was done with a station in Pensacola/Atmore AL: Buy 730, move the transmitter to Tallahassee, two towers with 50 kW. (They have a CP for 25.) It'll cover Thomasville with the day pattern, and with a class D, you don't have to cover Thomasville at night. You don't need 250 watts (minimum class B) to cover Tally inside the perimeter after dark for whomever might be listening then. You'll have a de-facto Tallahassee station. What about that app for 880 with 5 kW?

Another point: Despite GOP dominance of elected office, the lower-level bureaucrats and the FSU/FAMU crowd are mostly liberals. Therefore, not a very large (though maybe very influential) audience for Florida Radioactive.
Air America, anyone?

I'm not sure what the actual business model was..maybe he just was supposed to sell enough advertising to pay for the time..
1410 didn't make a blip in the latest ratings.

1270, now legally WNLS but using the "WFLA" CC-brand, is the only AM station to
pull any kind of audience. Preston Scott now does a local show from 6-9 am.
After that, it's Beck, Rush, local sports talker Jeff Cameron..goes back to Hendrie and CTC overnights.

WTAL, the first station I ever worked for (before talk radio ever was a buzzword in the business)is still listed as News/Talk in the ratings lists but this is not accurate. They air "Rejoice" gospel network from 6 pm to 9 am, brokered preacxhers from 9 to 2, then O'Reilly and Hannity in the afternoons.
In all seriousness, my nighttime AC-ish music show I had on this station, with 250 watts, to boot, pulled better ratings than WTAL EVER pulled as a talk station.

Don't know all the details, but the late John Pembroke, a personal friend of mine and a fine African-American broadcaster, owned the station and tried to get it moved. They allowed him to move it to Beachton, just over the state line, but no closer. Pembroke passed away a couple of years ago, and the owner now, Marion Williams, seems content with mostly brokered preachers and gospel music. (Whole 'nother story, I attempted to buy this station about 10 years ago but was out-bid. It had been silent for some time at that point. Wasn't to be..)

880's app was made by Advance Acquisition. I know nothing about them, nor do I think their CP has been granted. I think it might be part of Catholic Relevant Radio. I see NO NEED at all for another format like this. Tallahassee's AM band is really a waste. As an industry market veteran it makes me sick. Approximately
95.3% of the audience has given up listening to AM radio in this market.

Really not much of a surprise, IMHO. WHBT is an all-sports station after all, with ESPN Radio to boot. Unfortunately, the signal drops from 5,000 watts to just 18 watts after sundown, and barely covers the city of Tallahassee, while missing most of Leon County.

It's not just Tallahassee. Most people nationwide have all but given up on the AM dial, unless it's talk radio. Maybe Cumulus should sell 1410 to one of those Christian groups, buy one of those rimshot FM's, and put ESPN Radio there, like the company did in Macon, Ga., where "The Fan" moved from a 1 kilowatt AM daytimer, to a full-power FM signal. Probably won't happen anytime soon, though.

I remember reading somewhere that Tallahassee had the highest FM usage (therefore the lowest AM usage) of any market in the country. It may be a nationwide problem, but Tallahassee is the real canary in the coal mine.

Maybe that's why both FSU and FAMU have FM flagship stations for their radio networks during football season. If I'm right, the Noles are on WTNT-94.9 FM, and the Rattlers call 100.7 The Beat home.
