I believe that was the impetus when CBS killed a bunch of Rock stations in favor of "Free FM".

Which didn't work.

For the most part, the ratings were terrible. For those shows that did have ratings, the cost of talent was waayyyyy more than the BMI & ASCAP fees plus DJ talent.

Now, with PPM coming, Rock is looking good again.
 
I can't believe they broke up the morning team on QCB. That JR guy is by himself and all he does is laugh at his own jokes. Very annoying.

it's like- What does Bangor have left for radio? Even though personalities were only cut (and not actually stations (cough) Blueberry), it's still a huge shock. Now both WQCB and WBZN are pretty much taped all night, and the morning it's just one person on....odd to hear. Even the Top 5 @ 9 on BZN is gone. Just another old Black Eyed Peas song haha.

It's terrible. :(
 
This was on the home page of this website under the Cumulus story (center of page) "At the Bangor, Maine cluster, unconfirmed reports have at least four staffers laid off this past Tuesday."

What exactly has to be done to confirm this? Our paperwork from the Unemployment Office? LoL
 
On the Up side, if these corporate geniuses keep it up we'll all be able to pick up pretty good licenses at fire sale prices!

Of course the big big downside is the rocket scientists at corporate have killed off the "minor leagues" so there won't be very much in the way of decent talent left to bring up.
 
Hmm, wonder if this recession/budget crunch gets so serious stations start going dark? ??? :-\

Or, that after it, those that are still around, owners decide that well we got through the rough times without certain personnel, why add them back on again? (In order to keep overhead low to build the "reserves" back up.)

I wonder on both thoughts. The last 10-15 years are a different ballgame than the usual up and downs. More emphasis is put on what listeners will "tolerate" vs. what is "the best". I've seen it first, second, and third hand where the best person (if it's lucky enough to be filled by a human) doesn't always get the job.

Nobody is immune whether you're owned by a publically or privately held company. Heck, even middle men agencies like interep are out.

The zen in me says this the end of all old ways of doing business will soon be completley erased and soon the new model will appear. I just hope there's an actual new model.

Its being built as we type. But you can't build a nice, fancy new bulding on a foundation that is crumbling, ya know. What is the new model? Anyone's guess. But what we have right now doesn't appear to be working anymore... in all sorts of business models. Hang in there. Things will be better soon.

(Just my 2¢. Carry on, please)
 
I read on the Alabama board that there were 200 layoffs. Seems like that would be a full-time number; I would bet that if part-timers are factored in, it's more like 300 +/-.
 
I see that Chuck Foster is back on the WBZN website. Wonder what went down there.
 
apparently he's not on the air... i saw that also and listened in and heard nothing of him on, I actually heard the afternoon jock Damien, probably voice track until 8 than nothing but music/voice track. I really don't get that... he's on the site but ?

last i knew Z was using an automaiton system without the VTing set up or wasn't capable of VTing, or else they'd have had a jock from one of the other stations on...

still, i don't know why they would have him saying on the website he's doing nights when it's just automation/music/ occ. voice track?
