Cumulus buying Susquehanna

Cumulus and three financial partners are buying Susquehanna Radio for $1.2 billion. Susquehanna is simulteneously selling its 70% interest in its cable assets to 30% owner Comcast for $440 million.

It will be very interesting to see how this will all shake out when the dust settles... The only thing I can see is some format changes at the Bone and maybe KLIF and the TICKET swapping frequencies... (at least with the swap the Call letters will remain the same-- but the signal will get better for the TICKET)!

no doubt, Cumulus is a small-market operator, not enough sophistication to run major markets...

Cumulus has always been a medium market player in the radio biz. This is a MAJOR (and expensive) step up for them into the big leagues.

The deal won't be final until early next year, it will take more than a few months after that for them to organize their management team & flow chart and then a few months after that before they change anything on the programming level at the susquehanna stations.

I would expect the Bone could change formats by next summer, Klif may be re-shuffled by next October, the Wolf would be next for some fine-tuning and unless they are as crazy as Klif was when they broke up that cash-cow, I don't think the boys at the Ticket have anything to worry about until 2007 at the earliest.

They only bought 25 percent and the other 75 is owned by people that will most likely turn out to be cooler heads! Susquehanna may have left a lot of money on the
table in order to take care of current employees much like Kelly Broadcasting did when they sold Channel 3 in Sacramento, CA. to Hearst. Don't start jumping to conclusions until the dust
settles and the management personel is hired and in place to make decisions not to mention getting the sale approved by the FCC.

Next: How do we figure how much KRBE sold for in the package? I want to know how close my guess was to the actual sale price. Maybe I will win the prize!
Not holding my breath though! lol lol

I expect the Bone to relaunch their format and upgrade their signal, just like KIOL in Houston. That station is a rock format and they're owned by Cumulus!!!

I have a feeling 2006 will be a very interesting year for the soon to be former dallas susquehanna nation. My(hopeful)predictions:

A) KDBN will get the biggest shakeup, Scott and Jeff K will more than likely get the boot (we hope), as well as on-air staff getting pink slipped.

B) KPLX more than likely get a bigger rotation of country hits and thats about it.

C) KTCK wont see any major shakeups, save possibly a total move to FM and the sell of the 1310 frequency. Old Grey Wolf, Hambonita, Jr. Miller, Sweet Jubjub, The Son Of Eros and all the rest will keep their jobs way into 2007.

D) KLIF will probably go to full syndicated feeds and pink slip ankarlo and jeff ward impersonator gregg knapp. Ed "Cryptkeeper" Wallace will still keep his "Wheels" slot

I don't see KLIF and The Ticket swapping freq. Changes at the Bone though will happen. Scott and Jeff..sayonara.

93.5 in Greenville is owned by Susquehanna and will be owned by Cumulus Partners...but there is a 93.1 in Tyler owned by the loveable Clear Channel...don't expect them to allow 93.3 to upgrade in DFW if they can stop it....I know 93.3 has two nulls in their pattern..one to protect 93.5 before Susquehanna bought it and I think the other is to protect 93.1 KMKT in Bells...I doubt that one would allow 93.3 to upgrade any also. PLUS I think Crockett's 93.5 may be a killer for 93.3 as well.

For all the doom and gloom predictors out there, I'm thinking that you're all going to be severely let down. Sure it's possible the hated Bone people everybody talks about may finally be shown the door. But aside from changes in upper management and maybe the Wolf going to computers for their playlists instead of CD's (if they haven't already begun to) I seriously doubt anything earth-rattling will become of this.

Cumulus runs things as "bare bones" as possible....if I were an on-air personality at any current Susquehanna station, I would pay close attention to how the promotions people set up and tear down remotes. "Cumu-less" employees wear MANY hats. The only people that ac-"cumu"-late anything other than extra jobs for no extra pay at Cumulus are the suits at the top!
Edited by pmack on 11/01/05 02:11 AM.
