Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey Indicates Rock Will be a Major Format Initiative

The only snag I see is most of their Rock stations are Active AOR, and not Alternative based. They have a few efforts between WRRV and 1019 The End, 96Rock, and 99X*, but if they do intend on bringing a WRXP Rock based format to 103.9 here in NYC hopefully they are smart enough to avoid AOR which doesn't work.

I've not followed much of the talk about moving the transmitter for 103.9 down to the Bronx but would it be strong enough to cover the 5 boroughs?

3/5 of them.

Though alternative is the rock format generally mentioned as being worth trying in New York, there may be others.
I find it quite interesting that WWSK 94.3 on Long Island, which switched to rock (and calls itself The Shark) last September, has been pulling its highest ratings in many years (and many formats). Their most recent overall rating in Nassau Suffolk is 1.9, quite good considering their limited signal. But they are not really an alternative rock station. I would describe what they play as classic rock for younger listeners. So while they play little if any current rock, most of their songs are more recent than what would be heard on an average classic rock station, such as WBAB. Some are just a couple of years old.
Apparently The Shark has taken quite a bite out of the ratings for 'BAB.
I am not saying that this would be the best rock format for NYC. My point is that alternative may not be the only smart choice for a broadcaster considering bringing rock to New York.
