Cumulus CHR's are the worst I've ever heard

Was just listening to the stream of KLAL. Cumulus killed this station. What used to be a good top 40 station with a rock lean has turned into a recurrent/gold based station that could honestly be Hot AC. I heard only one or two currents in a half hour. It was that bad.

Doesn't surprise me. Cumulus has done that to all their Top 40 stations. Unfortunately for Little Rock, Citadel owned most of the major stations so it has really killed their market. Little Rock no longer has a true CHR. Maybe KHits 96.5 can flip from gold/recurrent based to current? They sounded really good as rhythmic CHR Hot 96.5.

KYIS in OKC still sounds good but its a Hot AC and that falls more in line with what Cumulus likes.

This company should divulge all its CHR stations or flip them. They cannot do CHR and people are better off listening to their iPods for Top 40 than a Cumulus CHR.

Cumulus is keeping "The A Team" from going Top 10 on BOTH CHR and Hot AC!!
My Cumulus station, WNTQ, just started playing this. Looks like Jeffries is allowing the add!

He did as of this week. He is also now allowing them to play Swedish House Mafia, "Don't You Worry Child."

Yeah, Q100 added "The A Team" and "Don't You Worry Child" yesterday - that certainly took a long time :-\

The sad thing is my Cumulus top 40 station, WNTQ, still sounds somewhat decent despite the playlist restrictions. From 7-12pm (minus Perez Nights) they play about 12 or 13 currents an hour and overnight about 9 or 10. It would sound better if they were allowed to add whatever they wanted and not Jan's "CHR" playlist. This is especially important since Clear Channel rival WWHT dropped it's heavy rhythmic lean to a mainstream pop direction, which could do some serious damage.

Glad they've added "The A Team," but they're doing a marvelous job screwing "Little Talks" at Hot AC. Thankfully, it made Top 10 at the format even without Cumulus' support.

Like atlantaboy said, anything that's remotely sonically challenging (from alternative, Hot AC, dance or urban angles) and isn't straight-up, easily digestible pop gets stifled by Cumulus. Extremely frustrating.

Regarding "The A-Team" - is it just me, or does it seem like that song's been around forever to just now be near the top 10? I was listening to it back in June...

Does anybody know why Jan dictates a standard playlist for all CHR stations (as well as other formats)? It made more sense before the Citadel aquisition when Cumulus only had a few CHRs nationwide that were all in small markets but in its insanity now. Is there any hope he may change that policy?

You are right, but I think Lights had a longer climb into the top 10 than this song has had.
True, I think it did.

I absolutely have to turn the radio when "The A-Team" comes on - it was great several months ago, but it's just ugh now. "Some Nights" and "One More Night" are similar, but in another way - they don't want to drop out of the top 10...

IIRC, the former Hot AC in my market, WWWM/Toledo, never played "Pumped Up Kicks" until it flipped to CHR earlier this year. Of course it's a Cumulus station.

^That station had a playlist of about 10 songs at a time when it was Hot AC - I'm glad they flipped
I couldn't agree with you more! My aunt used to say the same thing when they had Star 105 playing in her office back when it was Hot ac.
The best thing Cumulus did to 105.5 is make it Chr! So I don't have to be stuck with just 92.5 or deal with heavy amounts of interference with 98.7!

I had the "privilege" of hearing WMGB/Macon (driving home from a beach trip)

Unlike most other Cumulus CHRs, the sounds quality is "crisp", and the songs are slightly pitched - but as far as music goes, it's another pseudo-Hot AC (i. e. "Today's Best Music" sweeper into "Counting Blue Cars" by Dishwalla, followed by "Single Ladies" by Beyonce)

^Add the Cumulus "CHR" station in Albany GA to that list of WZYP clones - they have a retro-lunch with pop/rhythmic-leaning 90s and 2000s tracks

A station with the WNUQ call letters it is understandable that they would have some querkes. That, in my opinion, is the most odd set of call letters that I have ever heard of being assigned to a radio station. When I found the station a couple of years ago, it said it was a Hot AC station on cumulusstreaming.com though this was the same website that called WWKL a CHR when it's actually a rhythmic. Could you call KOQL another one of those stations? How about WBZN no longer owned by Cumulus? That station has always been more of a rhythmic-leaning Hot AC, but not quite as bad as WZYP I think that's the worst station they have. Actually, I kind of like WBZN, though haven't listened to it regularly in a couple of years.

I was assuming that Arbitron still labeled it as CHR (like WMGB and WZYP) - but thanks to Cumulus not subscribing to the Albany GA market, I can't tell - maybe they have changed it to "Hot AC"

Wikipedia still calls it CHR, not that that means anything

You beat me to that last sentence. Last time I listened was about 2 years ago and they were still promoting themselves like a CHR.

Thrift Shop is at no8 on CHR, no1 on i-tunes, streaming and the hot100, no1 on Rhythmic airplay and still NO CUMULUS add on their CHR stations! That's why we should hope that Power destroys Q100 in Atlanta. Maybe they'll change then.

They also just added Scream and Shout! So late!
