Cumulus CHR's improving?

ONLY Cumulus and ex-Citadel stations have added this on CHR! Just because of one person's decision it has already entered the top40 of the CHR chart! Insane!

It's interesting how a hit can chart based on the exclusive airplay of one company. We saw a similar occurrence with Madonna's "Give Me All Your Love" that was propped up thanks to Clear Channel.
Other companies played it too though. Even Cumulus added it.

In this case now it is ONLY Cumulus! And now that they own all the Citadel CHRs too they have even more power. Isn't Rob Thomas the lead member of the group? CUMULUS loves Rob Thomas for some reason...

Yeah, Cumulus always has had an obsession with Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 - especially on Q100/Atlanta several years ago.

I question how far the Matchbox 20 song can go, even with Cumulus's support. I wonder if it'll get any support from any of the other companies. They're quite established, and adult - kind of in the Goo Goo Dolls/Nickelback/Daughtry category, none who have done well on CHR in a while.

LOL yeah, I was just gonna say, Cumulus CHRs improving? Not WZYP in Huntsville! Still just as bad, if not worse, and still 80's at lunch and Friday mornings. Who ever said lunch time HAS to have old music anyways? Why does every damn station do this?

I suggest you buy the TuneIn radio app and listen to Kiss 102.7's retro lunch and see if you think it's any better than WZYP's. A lot of rythmic oldies with some Madonna, Guns and Roses and Billy Joel thrown in.

It's not just that Cumulus is adding Matchbox 20, they're putting it straight into medium rotation on a lot of their stations - they never did this with Rob Thomas's solo stuff

Either this is gonna blow up and other stations are gonna catch on, or Cumulus is gonna look like an idiot...I guess we'll know in a week or so

I've heard their retro lunch many times while in town. It's a LOT better than WZYP's (but of course that isn't hard to do lol). My only question is why is it at 11:00 instead of noon? I'm just so sick of old music (because that's all we have in Huntsville) that I don't care to listen to any of it right now.

On the Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 topic. No other Cumulus CHR can atest better to being in love with him than WZYP. You hear Rob Thomas every freaking hour on ZYP. Its no surprise to me at all that Cumulus has added it so quickly on their stations, and even if it doesn't do well, I guaranty it will remain in rotation on ZYP for years to come!

Some of the Cumulus CHR's were recently still playing "How Far We've Come" by Matchbox 20, from 2007 - I'm trying to think of ANY station I've heard that on in ages, let alone a CHR!

I sure wish I had a better title for this thread...lol

Good for them - it's a good song

Lol at people wanting Cumulus to play Demi Lovato and more Britney yet they think it's funny that Cumulus is playing Matchbox 20

If you don't like music, just a beat and some sex objects, read a magazine instead of listening to the radio

Once again, like I said in the other thread - yes, it IS funny - Demi Lovato is #17 on the CHR chart, and Matchbox 20 is #39. Why add something in to mid-rotation that nobody else is playing yet ignore a top 20 record?

Beats are what make up a lot of CHR right now. It's popular. No, I'm not huge on a lot of it either, but I don't know if CHR really cares what I like. Everyone has their own definitions of "music."

I think it makes them more cutting-edge than they were a few weeks ago - but again, if digital sales don't start to turn around soon, the song's gonna have to hit a brick wall

I guess we'll find out next Tuesday...

Maybe to a certain extent, but since Cumulus has had a long-time frendliness towards Matchbox 20, it would be a little different, say, if they had added "Everybody Talks" early (which they still aren't playing), that would definitely be cutting edge...

My prediction is that "She's So Mean" will do alright on Hot AC - but if groups like Nickelback, Daughtry, etc. can't even break through on CHR anymore, I don't see Matchbox being any different. I like MB20 a lot, but I don't know if they have the strength for CHR anymore.

This is exactly correct. As much as I LOVE the new MB20 song and think it deserves to be a CHR hit, it says nothing about Cumulus becoming cutting-edge given their past, shall we say, proclivities for MB20.

The difference between "She's So Mean" and the other underperforming recent releases by HAC core acts is that, quite frankly, MB20's latest is far more interesting and exciting than "When We Stand Together," "Heartbeat" and "Crawling Back To You." It probably won't be a CHR hit due to the format's stubbornness, but I did see that carolinaradio (and TheMusicMan) favorite Channel 961/Charlotte added it this week, so who knows?

No idea about the 11am hour. I guess not to compete with WZYP. I noticed 102.7 now airs Ryan Seacrest's show from noon to 3pm.

With Cumulus owning Journey 93.3 (80s/90s format), you'd think WZYP would retreat from that so that they won't step over their sister's toes. I was riding through north Alabama almost a month ago and ZYP sounded very bland.

I have been having many dreams lately about emailing WZYP and telling them they are the worst top 40 station in America. Maybe I ought to do it.

Those were my thoughts exactly. When they launched Journey I thought could it be that maybe for once ZYP will start sounding better?..... Nope. No change what-so-ever. Bland. Yes, they are VERY VERY bland!

LOL I have had that thought many many times my friend. Better yet, we should get a petition together with signatures of as many Madison County residents as we can explaining to them how terrible they are and demand some major changes. We can cc it to Cumulus corporate.

You thinking maybe a Facebook petition?

Hello from Atlanta! Aside from playing Matchbox 20.....There has been a SLIGHT shift in Q100's playlist as of late. And NO, it's not good news. First, all those strange older titles that they were playing only during middays....(like, Destiny's Child - "Jumpin Jumpin", Coldplay - "Speed Of Sound", and DHT - "Listen To Your Heart" (AC Version).......Well, they're now playing stuff like this well into the late afternoon as well overnights. I've also noticed that they're starting to play 2, maybe 3 songs in a row that are more than a year old. So....just sayin, if Q100 continues like this...they could very well reverting back the HOT-AC sound they were back in 2009! ???

Thank god for CC's WiLD, I guess!

Any thoughts?

This is the most "Q100 friendly" top 40 music has been lately. I would've guessed that the result would be Q100 sounding more like an actual chr. than ever before rather than still somewhat sounding Hot AC.

Speaking of WiLD, it's interesting to see a station that actually rotates Afrojack in Atlanta for the first time.

That might not be a bad idea. I know those tend to be ignored from time to time but it might be worth a shot. We could do a general petition calling for a real CHR station for Huntsville, at the same time stating how terrible ZYP is, and call for someone to make a change and send it to Cumulus, CC, and Black Crow so they all see it. Maybe it'll put the idea in one of their minds to research it and decide to flip one of their poorer performing stations to CHR if Cumulus refuses to change anything. WAHR 99.1 would be a perfect choice if Black Crow wanted to jump onboard. That signal is HUGE and their current A/C station ratings are in the toilet.

Show me where to sign up.....I'm in!

BTW, I ran across a couple of interesting Youtube clips of WZYP recently (2nd one is not very good quality):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkRwm6FvYpo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gpEpPqdMX4

The first one appears to be from '86 since the Hooters' "Where do the Children Go" is part of the set. Although it includes just 3 songs, only one is a "currently popular" song; the other two were from '82 (minor Eddie Rabbit hit (!)) and the other is a Bruce Springsteen......ALBUM CUT FROM 1973! On a so-called top-40 station!

The other clip is more telling....it includes about 15-20 songs from '88 (around September, I think), and although that one includes more "currently popular" songs.....three or four are from the 70s! Again, on a so-called top-40 station! :p

Although I didn't move to the Huntsville area until '97, it appears to me from these two clips that ZYP has had a "gold lean" even since the mid-80s. I know they have since I have been up here. Are there any long-time HSV area residents that can confirm this?
