Cumulus CHR's

Away from Atlanta for the weekend, I listened to a couple of other Cumulus CHR's, Montgomery and Ft. Walton Beach.

After the call letters and "a Cumulus station" at about 10 before the hour, you know what came next. "And now, here's 10 songs in a row." It was sure nice to catch a break from Q100.

I heard today Q100 do something new and innovative. Into the :50 spotset, they played little snipnets of songs coming up as part of ten in a row!

The closing production element plugged ten in a row and Bert Show. It's still a long way from "a hot steaming whirlpool of hits Power 99" but hey.
 
About two years ago, I was told that Cumulus only had two CHR's in the entire chain, yes TWO, that had competition and were winning in the 18-34 demo. I never have checked the validity of that statement, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were true.
 
Power 99 was the BEST!! It brings back fond memories for me as well.

Boomer and the rest of the crew kicked butt! REAL RADIO.....

When I was down on the gulf coast last week, WZNS Z-96 in Fort Walton Beach did the same thing along with the "All the Hits" slogan. I noticed B95.1 in Macon did the same exact thing. The music playlists on these stations are identical to Q100. Amazing! The only exception is that they play Seacrest/AT40 on the weekends and Q100 doesn't. I wonder why Q didn't jump on AT40 years earlier before Star snatched it up in January 2004? Was it because Casey Kasem just didn't fit in their age bracket then?
 
When PD's were flying to different locations, they always seemed to make certain they had a lay over in Atlanta so they could hear what Power 99 was doing. They took that information back to their stations and tried to duplicate it there. Man, that was when radio was great! I loved Power 99.

Too bad Boomer isn't on the air again. I hear him occassionally on EAGLE. He has an amazing delivery: sounds like the guy you'd like to have over for your pool party, B-B-Q, or just to hang out with. He's a funny guy.

Certainly would like to hear someone hire him.
 
Cumulus took over our long time heritage CHR station 104.1 KRBE in Houston from Subsaquanna last year. They started the 10 songs in a row thing here, too. KRBE was slightly slanted toward rhythmic, but still played a fair share of hot AC and Alternative leaning hits. After Cumulus took over, especially during the day, KRBE started leaning more towards Hot AC. At night they do throw in some hip-hop, and on Friday and Saturday nights have club mix shows. All in all, Cumulus definitely took KRBE in more of a Hot AC direction.
 
It's a shame what Cumulus did with KRBE, though the station is more then hanging in there - the ratings were practically unaffected by the changes.
Interestingly enough, KRBE was known as Power 104 back in the days of Atlanta's Power 99.

I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but the station formerly known as Peach 94.9 played the AC version of what was then American Top 20. As far as Star getting AT40, given that Seacrest used to be an on-air personality on Star, it would've made since for him being on there.

that's Cume-less' problem...they cookie cutter their stations...thinking that the playlist in Houston will work in...say...Poughkeepsie. They are then left scratching their heads when it doesn't work....or...hastily flipping formats to cover the ratings damage.

Basically, Cumulus sucks...period. Corporate radio at its worst.
