Cumulus Cincinnati chief engineer arrested

Incredible. It never dawns on people that you will get caught. They never know when to quit stealing. He probably won't do much if at all jail time.

My question is - how did no one notice the $129k worth of stuff missing!

Well it might be $129K worth- because that's what they paid for it in 1982. :D

It could be stuff that's been laying around the transmitter site for years, and nobody knows because nobody has ever been to the transmitter site except the GM.

At this point there are way more questions than answers.

Unless it was copper. Very strange story.

Can you imagine how much copper it would take to amount to $129k? WOW!

It depends on how you count it. If it was an old antenna or old transmission line that was laying around for years, but originally cost $129K, and he took it to the scrapyard to sell the copper, his employers could come after him for theft and say the value was what they paid for it.

Theft is still theft, and it's still wrong. But this could easily be something like that.

For the record, none of the records or other stuff in my basement and garage ever belonged to Cumulus!

Funny. It would be easy to lift some test gear..... Stuff you wouldn't use unless there was a problem.
An AM Field Strength Meter can be priced at 5 grand. A TDR, Portable OIB....
I have a friend that is a GM Plant Manager. One of his guys noticed some pretty sophisticated test gear on E BAY.
Alerted my buddy. Yup, it was theirs. They set up a police sting. This employee had a barn with over 500 grand of
GM stuff in it. That was the value of the stuff in storage. I never got the dollar amount of what was sold.
It was a big time embarrassment for the guys at that plant.

If Cumulus has been doing any recent upgrades, some of the stuff might still have some value. Say a Harris Digit exciter left over after an HD upgrade. Optimod 8100s and 9100s are still selling pretty good, just look at what they are going for on ebay. Honestly, I have never worked at a station where I saw a pile of equipment that was worth losing my job over. Most days now when I see a bunch of stuff laying around, I have flashbacks of how much of a PIA it is to deal with it.

Shoot, we had a Harris Digit exciter that no one wanted.

I'm hearing through the rumor mill stories of a lot of empty racks at transmitter sites that used to have backup equipment in them. If those stories are true, it's way more than scrap copper, and if someone is convicted of that that theft they could be in prison for a long time.

Thats why we do inventories. Hold the Managers accountable for their respective stuff.

Well yeah, but how many General Managers have they had in the last 15 years? I've had 4 in Louisville. And only one of those actually took the time to visit the transmitter sites. The rest wouldn't even know how to get there.

And if they did, they wouldn't know what they were looking at.

The engineers at radio stations are in a position that requires absolute trust. They have the keys and passwords to everything, and are expected to keep track of every asset on the inventory sheet.

This person has to be absolutely trustworthy and dependable or utter mayhem may ensue causing huge loss of revenue or assets, including intellectual property, by the broadcasting company. That's why these guys are paid such handsome salaries.

Oh, wait.... :p

Are you kidding? You can't give that junk away! ;D
