So whats going on with the Cumulus, Citadel deal in Nashville?

Unconfirmed reports has the official take over around Labor Day. That means Citadel employees have less tan two months to find other jobs.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

What do you base that on Journeyman? It could actually be the other way around. Consolidation doesn't necessarily guarantee the buyer is going to clean house on the buyee. Maybe they keep the best people at the best properties.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

"Whopper" - get with the Nashville board protocol and mantra...

Crapuluss doth nada correct...ever.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

I predict the feds will put major conditions on the merger. Not just the ones having to do with ownership caps.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

Think they will get Barney Frank to oversee that Crums doesn't ruin every radio station they "own?" before the big eventual bailout? You heard it here fir

I base that on how I have seen Cumulus operate. Wildly talented people let go. Replaced with less talented (but far cheaper) people. The few talents left are stretched so thin they become transparent. But I shall no longer address the issue. I have been asked by a friend I respect not to spread the negative energy. Cumulus does enough of that -- and does a far better job of it.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

Sad to say but it will all be about the bottom line. In most cases the ones above the line will be let go. No more "teams" on the air...one host/jock per shift and paid "experts" a thing of the past.Might not happen on the first day but most likely will happen.

On the other hand, the "new" company will want to succeed... ROI formulas will be applied for sure, but the most successful stations will largely go untouched for some time to come. Immediate changes in Nashville will come in merging staffs and shoring up behind the scenes stuff. A lot will depend on the market manager... the wholesale changes of a few years ago were because of who the particular market manager was... change is "relative'...

What makes you think this? I'd love to see the FCC crackdown on such massive corporate ownership, but all indication is that they're going to continue to allow it until all media is owned by one company...

Now that would be "the blind leadinb the blind", wouldn't it...

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

I've been told Cumulus has a corporate policy prohibiting live announcers outside of drive time, but that doesn't look to be the case in Nashville as they at least have someone local on WSM-FM. Though I suppose she could be voicetracked, Cumulus lacks part-timers at many of its stations, which leads me to think she's probably at least full-time if not live. It looks like some of their other larger markets have local middayers as well, though nights appear to be automated and/or syndicated at pretty much all of their stations.

I know the local Cumulus stations lost around 60% of their staff when the massive downsizing happened in late '08 and early '09. Of course, their stations here had a lot more staff than your typical Cumulus station did, and they were also achieving very healthy margins, which I'm sure convinced Cumulus to hold back on making massive cuts until about three years ago.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

Prediction that Cumulus will take a careful look at the on-air performance of each station and take its time bringing it into line with company objectives.

The things that happen off the air? That stuff will change relatively quickly.

So sayeth Magic 8 ball.

Re: Cumulus, Citadel

Anyone wanna step out there and take a magic guess on the definition of "company objectives?"

Company Objectives (kum*puh*nee ob*jeck*tivz) n. 1. Corporate goals. 2. Corporate mission statement. 3. In radio, the desire of corporate executives, board members, and shareholders to slash personnel and costs to the bone, thereby running stations with as little expense as possible in order to line their own pockets with millions earned on the backs of hard-working, over-worked employees. 4. Greed (see def. 3).

They will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
