Cumulus Montgomery also let go new AM show host Jim Hunter who replaced the legendary Don Day only 2 and half months ago. Rumor has it that his furniture just arrived from Cleveland, Ohio only last week. Veteran in-house news guy Marcus Hyles and WXFX midday maven "Ripley" we're also among the casualties. Andy Scott goes it alone on the morning show...for now.

things are tough all over-- paul mctear lectured about the tv industry last night at aum-- and was very engaging -- said tv revenue is off 25%... wondered what was gonna happen after election $$$ dry up next week in ohio-- but was thankful for the " unknown amounts of money coming in thank you very much"-- that one got a big laugh:)

scary times for media -- ripley is one of tha hardest working jox i know-- great attitude-- i hate it for her--

marcus and i did the afternoon show at wlwi for 2 years back in the 90's-- love marcus!! funny smart guy--

And it's a shame people will still apply at this shady company.

I cant imagine anyone would want to work for this company. This happens every October. They obviously believe that people are not the reason for their success or lack thereof.
What an embarrassment to work for Cumulus.

I used to work for Clear Channel, so I know all about working for embarrassing (and cheap) companies. I thought Cumulus was above this sort of behavior. I was wrong. Ironically, their mantra is/was "We put our profits into people, not equipment."

I like Marcus Hyles. Hadn't listened to new guy that replaced Don Day . What will happend to news now in Wlwi or Marcus

"This behavior"? Seriously? It's not about a behavior. It's the state of the industry. This has been happening for 10 years now! Every October the budget ax swings. CC, CBS, Citadel, "mom & pops", EVERYONE! It's just this year Cumulus has more fat to trim than the others. Don't forget the whole economy thing going on right now, too. I have NEVER seen the ad dollar pool so weak as it is now. How the hell is a company suppossed to pay people if no money is coming in? Every industry is cutting people right now.

But if it makes you feel better to slam Cumulus than prepare yourself for more of this "behavior" over the next several years, be my guest.

Gee...thanks for your granting me the right to gripe. Lemme guess...IF you work in radio, you're in sales or management. Either way, you're either clueless or heartless. What other business lessens the quality of the product it offers and expects sales to go up?

As for 'preparing myself for more of this behavior' I don't see that happening. I've been in this business for 29 years. I've had enough.

To answer your question, I am in programming. Have been for my 15+ years. I'm just a jock who has been there, done that, but also has the sense to realize that times have been, are, and will still be changing. I have prepared for a life after radio. Because it's a contant tightening of the industry. Too many people fighting for too many jobs for constantly less money. That's the reality.

"What other business lessens the quality of the product it offers and expects sales to go up?"

For the moment..how about some automakers. Chrysler is a perfect example. How about some TV networks. Reality TV is all about low production costs, and many show it. The tweeking of a product to try and raise profits has been happening for DECADES! From toys, to household cleaners, to...well, you name it! Yes, many of thoser tweeks have been a lessening of a product. Depending how you market it, it either works or fails. Radio's inability to market itself sure ain't helping.

I can understand your frustration. I really can. If I had 30 years in something and it's all I've known, and seeing the industry shrivel in front of me, I'd be bitter and frustated too.

There was a time when if you bought a radio station, you had to prove to the government you could operate it for 7 years without making a penny. You could only own 7 radio stations in 7 different markets, only 2 in one market, AM/FM. You had to serve the public as a public trustee. Remember PSA's and community affairs programs. Probably not, theyhaven't been around for 12 years. Remember Bill Clinton who allowed deregulation. Have you heard some of the language that is used on the air today. FCC used to issue fines, and I mean big fat fines with lots of zeros and not just to companies but to individuals and for little things like not keeping your transmitter log up to date.
Have you seen the salaries of some of these radio CEO's? One CEO, I won't won't mention his name but his company pays him $11 million a year, that is almost $1 million a month and the company has to pay the taxes on his $11 million earned. He is quiet the man, he took a pay cut from $17 million a year and was having the company pay the taxes on that salary. Their stock has gone down in the past 2 years from a healthy $10.00 a share to penny stock, closed at .28 a share today. Cumulus is doing great. Their stock is around $1.68 a share. This CEO has never opened a mic or sold advertisement, yet is an expert at programing and marketing.
Today's companies don't invest in their product, on air people, being local and good promotions, and I don't mean giving away CD's. How about giving away $10,000 every hour every Thursday during the book along with trips and cars. Today's radio companies are greedy and don't care about any one of their employees. Look at their salaries and insurance coverage, if they have any. Radio is the only industry I know of where the all night person actually makes less than anyone. If you work the 3rd shift as a police officer or say at an auto manufacturing plant, you make more than the others.
That poor guy that came to Montgomery to work mornings at WLWI. There ought to be a law. I was looking forward to hearing him when I'm in town over the holidays.
I could have been a plumber and made decent money with weekends and holidays off. Stop up that commode on Thanksgiving day and I'll be right over with a plunger in my right hand and your bill in the left. Better have cash on hand.
Maybe some of these CEO's will choke to death on all that money they have laying around. But then, is it really their fault. Look at the shareholders. Why do they allow these people to make such outlandish salaries and why do they allow them to bring their stocks down penny stock and be on notice from the NYSE. Can't say it's the economy, this has been going on for a while.
Lose your job in radio, where you gonna go work? There's only a hand full of cheap companies out there. You used to be able to go across the street and go to work. Now you have to go across the country, change your identity and give up your first born.
I think I'll go to work at Dairy Queen.

I'm not sure who this Skipper1 person is... but it's not THE SKIPPER... I am Windle J.... The Skipper who worked at Fox and now works For Q96.1. I wasn't going to post on the subject of Cumulus, but I see someone took the time to rant and try to make it look like me.
So just let me say this... it's a hard time to be in the business. The economy has affected not only radio, but everyone who ownes a business. I think a lot of very talented people lost their jobs, and I don't for a minute believe Bernie or Bill got a laugh or experienced out of the process. You have to make money to stay in business and sometimes good people get let go... and it might happen to you or me one day. Good luck to us all...

I'm not sure who THE SKIPPER is, but it is not skipper1. I was not trying to make my post look like it came from THE SKIPPER, but from skipper1. skipper1 would never impersonate or falsely accuse someone of something they didn't do.
I have only posted the facts. Please take the time and show us where skipper1 tried to make his post look like it came from THE SKIPPER?

I had my own business . But I had to close the doors Friday was my last day. I wasn't making no money and I had to close 2 months before Christmas.
