Cumulus getting Citadel?

If Cumulus Media gets Citadel, how will it affect the Charleston and Columbia markets (I doubt MB would be affected since it's already Cumulus)?

I predict more bloodletting.....Cumulus is not afraid of that. IMO, this won't be a good change for these clusters.

Thoughts?

I'd rather see the other way around happen. Citadel get Cumulus. Wonder what happens in Charleston with 96.9 The Wolf, 95sx, z93 Jamz, and 1250 WTMA

One thing is for certain I am sure once The Cloud Company starts tinkering with it's new properties 95SX will sound just like every other Cumulus owned CHR and if they keep The Wplf I am sure it will sound like every other Cumulus country station... OH YEAH and plenty of Rob Thomas for 95SC as well... CC1

Also z93 Jamz will probably sound different if this deal happens for sure. And lets hope 95sx doesn't get a different name like i95. Up in Myrtle Beach theirs a i100 owned by Cumulus plus their was once a 106.5 The Wolf which Citadel told Cumulus couldn't use the name because 96.9 had the name because you are able to pick them both up in areas.

I don't agree with everything Citadel has done as a company, but I think they run their stations more....professionally. Cumulus runs on even smaller staffs. The other way around would have been better but impossible.

I would not be surprised if WSSX goes more pop/rock and in Columbia if B106.7 starts sounding more like a true AC. There will be changes, that's for sure. I'm sure the talkers will see cuts. I've read some horror stories from Cumulus employees around here.

Heck, Cumulus hasn't even gotten around to putting their recent website template in all of their markets.

This is just going to be a mess. Cumulus will have more stations on their profile while they can't even take care of their current stations on their profile. I'd rather see someone else had purchased Citadel (CBS Radio, Entercom) or go the other way around like I said before. But CBS Radio doesn't want to go into smaller markets but at least we would see most of these stations stay as is and probably get even better.

Yeah, I saw Entercom was interested....if they had bought, that would have put them in all big 3 markets in SC. I think they would have run the Citadel stations better....they aren't as cheap as Cumulus. CBS in markets in the 150s....not sure about that. Can't really even imagine them doing it.

WOMG should be safe. Cumulus has shown favor to the classic hits format, even when a lot of stations were dropping oldies several years ago. I think most of their Urbans do well also. I wouldn't be shocked if they did something with 96.9 in Charleston though. Never seen their country attempts.

Yeah CBS wants to be in markets 50 and above. They would run the stations well. Not to sure how Entercom runs things but I know better then Cumulus.

I have said before that Cumulus runs their Myrtle Beach stations just horrible. Stations in Wilmington, NC sound better; WGNI which is AC, Coast 97.3 Rhythmic/CHR. Those two can be picked up well in Myrtle Beach.

Cumulus would be dumb to flip 96.9 The Wolf, its a great station that sounds good. That would be telling Apex your the #2 country station now.

From what I have read in this and other threads it sounds like this buy out is bad news for broadcast radio and will have mostly negative effects on just about every market they take over. This does not surprise me a bit I remember when in the cable business Waner Annex Corp. started growing and taking over many different companies the saying back then was if you want to kill something just sell it to Waner Annex they'll take care of it, of course now they are combined to form Time Wanner Cable today but they still have a bad habit of killing many things that they touch and not taking care of many of things that they run very well, in fact I believe that if it had not been for fiberoptic cable and roadrunner internet service they probly would have died out in many markets today that they still operate in. I wonder if broadcast radio will see something like that come along to help save it from our current problems like this one I know HD radio sure isn't going to do it but maybe there is something out there that will help us.

Stations like B106.7 and 107.5 The Game will suffer the most. They are very good radio stations with live and local programming. Cumulus doesn't do live and local and they sure don't do good radio.

It's like a bigger version of NextMedia...

Yesterday my wifes aunt went with my mother in-law wife and I to get a sandwich in Santee, we drove her car. I noticed she had XM radio turned on and it was on Roadhouse. Since 90& of what roadhouse plays is also on our station(WLRE) I had to ask why she liked XM Radio. She said she was paying 12 dollars a month and could hear most of the music she likes and could not hear it anywhere else. I told her we play the same thing as roadhouse on our station and she said yes and she listens quit often but that she also likes Rock & Roll, 70's Rock, and some easy listening that she can't get on regular off air stations plus there are way too many commericals and that things just don't sound like they use to on regular radio. People use to tell you what songs were coming up or what songs were just played along with local events going on in our area. She told me that they were often funny, sometimes serious but always pleasant to listen to, kinda of like listening to a friend. Now she said on regular radio half the songs they play even on a station with older music isn't anything she wants to hear and that the people that talk between the songs really don't say anything useful or funny anymore. She said on XM that there isn't anybody good to listen to about anything between the songs either but that a least the music is much better than on most local regular radio stations and that was her real reason for listening to XM instead of local radio. With what she told me it would seem that the one main thing that broadcast radio holds over XM or Sirius is live and local along with good DJ's and if the big companies don't wake up to this fact then in a few years they won't be so big at least not in broadcast radio or whats left of it. I have to say she knows how to make a point of something.

I can't believe all of the weekenders B106.7 has. They will probably change it musically to sound like a real AC and cut half of the staff, I'd expect something more similar to Magic 98.9 here in Greenville. Watch WOMG go more towards 70s rock and lose the local feel it has. Most of Cumulus' CHRs and Classic Hits stations sound the same.

Nice point, Gatekeeper- the main thing I dislike about satellite is that sometimes it is too focused. I like WCBS-FM's type of music, for example, but that is on 3 different channels (60s, 70s, 80s channel) on satellite. I like a little more variety on a station, personally.

WOMG will be barely impacted as they are automated in mid-day already, the night show is syndicated and the PM drive guy is the Program Director. They may lose their weekend part timers. The full timers may be doing Saturdays or they'll just automate/voicetrack.

Yeah, that's a good point. Funny that B106.7 has someone on 7-midnight and overnights. Most AC's just syndicate and/or automate in those times. Citadel has a lot of weekenders in Columbia....most of the weekday jocks in G/SP have to do weekend shifts, be they live or tracked.

BTW, will Cumulus get the 6 or 7 Last Bastion stations? 107.3 in Charleston is in the trust, I believe, but Citadel still operates it.

What makes B 106.7 in Columbia not make them sound like a true AC? I thought they always sounded like the old sister station Sunny 96.9 in Charleston and the current Lite 105 from Providence, RI.

B is not your run of the mill AC but it isn't exactly a Hot AC either. I'd call them Bright AC if anything. They are a bit more upbeat than your average AC.

B has a very wide playlist for the format and plays a strange hybrid of some AC currents, some Hot AC currents, and plays recent AC songs that weren't even big hits. Not many AC's play Mat Kearney, Brandon Heath, Dave Barnes, etc. They are kind of all over the road with the 70s and 80s. I don't consider them normal for an AC....more of a hybrid between AC and Adult Hits, IMO. When the Dickeys get in control things will probably tighten up.

Interesting about WMGL - Citadel doesn't list them on their website, but the WMGL website says they're a Citadel station. FCC still says Last Bastion is the licensee.
