ATLANTA -- April 29, 2009: Cumulus and Cumulus Media Partners are requiring all employees, including management, to take five days of unpaid furlough between May 1 and June 30. The news was given to employees in a company-wide conference call this morning.

the report from Radio-Info's main page indicates that this does not apply to Cumulus Media Partners.

Radio-Info’s T-R-I newsletter revealed on Tuesday that the publicly-held Cumulus Media was holding a Wednesday morning conference call for its managers. Late this afternoon the word spreads through the ranks that the company aims to cut costs by asking all employees – fulltime and part-time – to take five days of unpaid furlough time between May 1 and June 30. That request apparently does not apply to Cumulus Media’s privately-held sister, Cumulus Media Partners. CMP owns the 33 former Susquehanna Radio stations in mostly larger markets.

So everybody has to give up a week's pay? The people who work check-to-check, and there are many, will fall behind on their bills. Once you get behind it's very hard to catch up. Of course the owners don't have that problem. There's special place in hell for the greedy sons of bitches that control radio. Don't through out a line about the bad economy either. Radio is still making money in most places. It's just that the owners aren't hitting their huge, precious margins. :(

Seriously, if you are desperate need of saving cash, just give everyone a 2% pay cut across the board, which amounts to the same $$ savings. But at least that way it would have a smaller impact on the regular paycheck. Losing a full weeks pay could cause people to lose cars or apartments, or power, for that matter.

The edict does apply to CMP. Everyone except contract employees in both companies. What it means is "get everything done and then go away and lose 5 days pay."

News to everyone but we are in a major recession. Read the news major companies are instituting masive layoffs. Cumulus is not laying off. People are keeping their jobs and those with benefits stil have benefits.

Also taken a 2% paycut vs. what they offered is actually a worse deal. They are giving people 9 weeks to take 5 days off so depending how you take it you can lessen the blow on your paychecks. With a 2% pay cut you get no extra days off and your salary forever is 2% lower because it is doubtful they are going to give you a bigger raise down the road.

If you're in the radio biz and NOT looking for another job then you deserve what will eventually happen to you... unemployment.
